When Adrianna Edwards of Galveston, Texas started her journey to work on Tuesday, November 26, she probably thought it would be a day like any other.

She’s a waitress at a local Denny’s and she walks a total of 14 miles to work and back several days a week.

Imagine having a job that kept you on your feet for your whole shift and then having to walk home. And not just around the block. You have a 7-mile hike ahead of you. Edwards’ has lost 25 pounds since she started walking to work, which she likely sees as a nice side benefit, but that isn’t why she’s walking.

When speaking to ABC News, she said,

“I have bills to pay. I’ve got to eat. You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.”

But as of that fateful Tuesday, Edwards no longer needs to make the trip to work on foot.

Just Another Morning, Just Another Shift

That morning, a couple sat in her section for breakfast.

According to Edwards,

“She wanted more ice cream, so I got her, like, some extra ice cream.”

Clearly, there was more to the conversation, because while at Denny’s the couple who have asked to remain anonymous, found out that Edwards was saving to buy a car, but for the time being, was walking to work.

The couple ate their meal and left, and Edwards probably didn’t give them another thought.

But her story must have resonated with them because they set out to do something to help her out of her situation.

A few hours later, they returned and handed Edwards the keys to a 2011 Nissan Sentra.

Edwards’ first reaction was disbelief. She told ABC News,

“In my head I was like, pranks are cool and everything, but this one is just a tad bit cruel.”

But this was no prank, and Edwards now has a car to make her journey to work and back. However, the disbelief hasn’t worn off. A few days later she was still struggling to believe what strangers had done for her.

Standing in front of her home, she shares with a reporter,

“This morning, the first thing I did when I woke up was look out my window and see if it was actually there, or if I dreamed it.”

Plans to Pay it Forward

Edwards is going to have a lot of extra time on her hands. Walking, her commute took 4.5 hours. Her drive to work and back is now 30 minutes. One way she plans to use her time is by going to college. That had been her plan all along, but now she says she can move up her plans and enroll sooner.

As for the couple who gifted her the car? The woman told ABC News,

“She teared up, which made me happy that she was so moved by that.”

And while they didn’t want any money in return for their gift, they did have a request for Edwards.

“Hopefully someday she will just pay it forward.”

Something that Edwards plans to do.
