Two American English teachers were living abroad on Jeju Island, South Korea when they were told about some stray puppies nearby.
Strays are not uncommon in South Korea, but living on the streets isn’t easy in any part of the world, for any species, so the couple decided to go check the situation out for themselves.
They found a site that was due to be demolished, where they could hear the little pups crying and barking for attention.
They were living in awful conditions, under a pile of wood and among garbage.
The couple, Karlee Anderson and her boyfriend Jon, managed to lure all of the puppies out from of their makeshift living space with food and water – but it took days!
They would visit every morning, evening, and lunch break until the puppies finally emerged.
They were elated but knew they still had to act fast and rescue the dogs before the demolition started. But their mom was nowhere to be found.
The sun went down and they eventually had to give up for the night and leave the site. They put the puppies in a crate and brought them to safety, before returning again the next day.
By leaving the puppies out in the crate, their mom could hear their cries and came running for them.
Once she saw the couple, however, she ran off again. She was skittish and had clearly had a terrible experience with another human before. So bad, that she wouldn’t even get in the back of a car with her babies inside, and no food could bring her out of hiding.

Karlee and Jon tried everything imaginable to get the mom to come with them to safety. But she wasn’t having it and refused to leave.
They were out of ideas and concerned about her wellbeing. And of course, the wellbeing of the puppies who were missing their mom.
Then, a local who had been periodically leaving food out for the strays at the site came up with an amazing suggestion.
He believed that if they put the crate of puppies on the back of his truck, that their mother would chase after them.
And he was right!
She followed the truck down the street towards Karlee’s house. Of course, the man was sure to take his time and make it easy for the mama dog to keep up.

When they got to their destination it was clear she was relieved and couldn’t wait to be reunited with her puppies again.
She stayed outside Karlee’s house for days, still too scared to be in such close proximity to humans. She was dedicated and wouldn’t leave her pups, but just couldn’t put her trust in Karlee and Jon.
After a week of staying stand-offish, she finally gave in and went inside the house to be with her babies.
She eventually warmed up to Karlee and her partner, and got comfortable being in the home.
They decided to name the mama Hinsoona, along with her puppies; Pup, Pie, Honey, and Luna.
They were all nursed back to full health and then adopted into their forever homes through Korean K9 Rescue.

This just goes to show that there’s nothing stronger than a mother’s love.
