Sgt. Brian Johnson, the public information officer for the Franklin Police Department, laughingly stated, “I don’t know what goes through the mind of a dog that comes into a room and is overwhelmed with toys and everything else!” We are thinking he might have thought Christmas had come early since he has been such a good boy!

Ben Franklin had been taking the toys to his “lair” which included a stuffed llama, penguin, and the baby doll from the video. When Ben had realized he was being filmed and caught, he started to pick up his pace and get his baby doll toy to his bed. ““I’m not sure what his rhyme or reason was, maybe they were just easy and close to the door?” Johnson chuckled.

Johnson laughingly defended Ben Franklin, who he states is usually a good boy. Ben, a golden retriever, is a therapy dog and his main job on the police force is to diffuse tense situations and provide therapeutic comfort to those in need. His main job is to visit schools and be there for the children who need his services. Maybe he was collecting these toys for them.

The Franklin Police Department posted Ben’s thievery on their Facebook page and the hilarious post quickly went viral! Along with the video, the officers wrote about the lesson that Ben Franklin had taught them that night.

“We learned an extremely valuable lesson today. When you have a classroom full of toys ready to be shipped off to the Santa Foundation, you should…

1.Close the door to the classroom

Or

2. Keep the toys elevated

If not, a golden retriever will slowly hoard them throughout the day and bring them back to his lair. Thanks to Officer Cusson for capturing this larceny on camera.”
