There is a reason people refer to bears as “nature’s best moms”! There isn’t anything a mama bear wouldn’t do for their cub and if you find yourself between her and her babies, you might want to move.
They are admired for their fierceness and brute strength. These same qualities are what make the grizzly bear an extremely protective animal mother. While black bear mothers tend to abandon their young if someone is bothering them, grizzly bears are much more aggressive and will attack. – Motherhood Point of Fact
While they are protective, they are also caring – just like this story shows.
A mother would never intentionally leave their baby behind. For one mama bear in Yosemite National Park, it ended up getting her on the news. It’s a sad example of humans getting in the way of the natural order of things and who feels the consequences of it.
A Yosemite Ranger posted a photo of a mama bear standing over her cub.
The reason? The little cub was struck by a car and died on the side of the road. The mama bear dragged the little body off to the side, hoping it would wake up. Hour after hour the bear sat by the body of her lifeless child, hoping he would wake up.
“It’s been nearly six hours and she still hasn’t given up on her cub,” the ranger explained. “I can just imagine how many times she darted back and forth on that road in attempts to wake it. It’s extremely lucky that she wasn’t hit as well.” – Today
