The Americans and the British may both speak English and become a melting pot of different nationalities but that’s probably where their similarities end.
They talk differently with different accents, and their English language still sounds different from each other. The Americans are led by a President while the British are led by a queen.
But these things don’t bother the British though as much as these American habits.
The British understand a lot of things about the Americans but these 30 habits just baffles them so much.
1. Toilet water
Why is there so much water in the toilet? A British toilet have been designed to use less water using only 1.28 gallons per flush. But the American’s toilet have so much water, it uses 3.5 to 7 gallons per flush. What’s up with that?
2. Prescription medicine TV ads
Why do prescription medicine have commercials on TV? It’s so weird.
3. When Brits order no ice
The American stares at them as if the British said they just kidnapped their family. What is up with the ice obsession in the US?
4. They call juicy bits “pulp”
It’s juicy bits in the UK. The American’s call it “pulp.” Weird.
5. Paying with credit card
When did paying with a credit card become so complicated? They swipe it for the payment then swipe again for the tip?
6. We just want to walk
How can it take hours to walk in America when it only takes 1/3 of the time in Britain? It’s only a short distance!
7. Root beer
What is root beer? Whoever came up with that idea?
8. Same colored money
Why are all American dollars the same colors? We need to look at each one to know how much it is? What a waste of time.
9. One dollar bill and one dollar coin
Why do both of these exist? Why not just keep one kind?
10. Sickeningly sweet
Why is everything smothered with so much sugar? It just makes all food so excessively sweet.
11. Drive-thru everywhere
So many drive-thru. Do Americans really have less time on their hands?
12. Too many condiments
There ‘s a condiment for everything! There’s ketchup, mayo, mustard, ranch sauce, horseradish sauce, bbq sauce, wasabi, hot sauce. And that’s just a few.
13. American breadsticks and UK breadsticks
One is a small baguette and the other one are thin, long, and crunchy sticks. Which breadstick belongs to whom?
14. Electric kettle
Why aren’t there more electric kettles in American homes? How will they get hot water for their tea?
15. Liquid tea?
How do you heat that? You mean, they don’t use a tea bag?
16. College sports
College sports are big thing in America. They actually have a big fanbase.
17. High school graduations
Why is there even a graduation ceremony? In the UK, students just go to pub and drink off their last exam.
18. Biscuits vs cookies
Why are biscuits called cookies? Who ever thought of that idea?
19. Biscuits and gravy
But biscuits are perfect with jam and tea. Why smother it with country gravy?
20. Still lemonade
Lemonade isn’t fizzy in America?
21. 24-hour groceries
24-hour groceries? People go to groceries at the dead of night? Don’t American sleep?
22. The different meaning of ‘how are you?’
When the British ask another person ‘how are you?’, they really want to know. When Americans ask ‘how are you?’, it’s considered small talk.
23. Outlets with no switches
This is baffling for a lot of British people. How can American home outlets have no switches? So when they leave the house, it’s still turned on?
24. Laundry room
The British keep their washing machines in their kitchen. The Americans have a room dedicated for their washing machine, dryer, laundry supplies, and even a folding area for their clothes.
25. Exclusive tax
Why can’t Americans include the tax in the price already? Why does it have to separate? This is especially problematic when they bring the exact change and now have to scramble for more money to pay the tax.
26. Free refills
Fast food places love to offer this. You get free refills with every order! In Britain, you get one cup. That’s it.
27. Extreme A/C
The British people don’t understand how American stores are so cold. They sometimes have to resort to bringing their parkas during the peak of summer heat because it’s just too damn cold inside stores.
28. No big chocolate Easter eggs
Americans celebrate Easter with egg hunting. In fact, it’s so popular there. But apparently, they’re not very big on chocolate Easter eggs. So confusing.
29. Gaps in public restroom stalls
Public restroom stalls in America are weird. They have gaps on the door that’s big enough for someone outside to peek inside. Peeping Tom, much?
30. High school sports = college scholarship
The British do not care much about high school and college sports. In fact, the fact that high school students can attend college on a sports scholarshio baffles them. A lot.
