Anyone with a cat knows just how darn intelligent they can be! Most cats use that intelligence in all the wrong ways, but we can’t deny how smart they are. Whether it’s learning how to open doors or opening the fish tank lid for a little snack, we’ve all witnessed our felines do something that reminded us of their brains.
Still, there are occasional standout cats that use their powers of intelligence for good, rather than evil. This is the story of one of those cats!
A number of years ago on the Oprah Winfrey Show, a couple shared the story of how their cat saved their child’s life.
Roy and Bernita Rogers got married and always had dreams of starting a family. They wanted as big a family as they could get and started trying soon after they tied the knot. Sadly, it wasn’t as easy as they had hoped. After three pregnancies and no child, they became disheartened.
They were heartbroken and didn’t know how they were going to handle this devastating blow.
Then, a small ray of light entered their life. A stray cat wandered into their backyard, looking for love. Naming the cat Midnight, they welcomed the small life into their home in the wake of their heartbreaking loss. What they didn’t know was that this black cat was about to bring some good fortune into their home.
Within a year of bringing Midnight into their home, the Rogers were pregnant!
Only this time, things were different. Bernita finished the pregnancy and gave birth to a little girl named Stacey. With their little miracle in their arms, they were the happiest they had ever been in their lives. Their family was growing as they always hoped it would.
One night, however, something terrifying happened.
The couple was very protective over their girl (as would make sense) with how much they had gone through to get her. Each night they placed the baby monitor in her crib and would listen for any signs of danger. Additionally, Midnight had taken a liking to the child and would often look over her as she slept!
At 6 weeks old, Stacey got sick.
After a trip to the doctors, the family was told that it was simply a head cold and that she needed rest and it would pass soon. Heading downstairs after putting Stacey to sleep, Bernita began hosting her parents who were visiting that afternoon.
Suddenly, Midnight ran out of the room and jumped onto Bernita’s lap over and over again.
Midnight was clearly persistent, but Bernita didn’t give him any mind. Finally, Midnight went upstairs into the baby’s room and started screeching into the baby monitor. Now, he finally had the family’s attention.
The family ran upstairs to find Stacey blue in her crib and gasping for breath.
Stacey had gone into full respiratory failure. Rushing to the hospital, they were able to stabilize Stacey without a moment to spare. Her life had been spared. Incredibly, they all realized at that moment that Midnight had quite literally saved the little girl’s life.
Now, Stacey is grown up and has a little black cat to thank for her happy life.
Maybe God knew what he was doing when he made cats so stubborn and smart! At least one family is thankful for it.
