Heroes come in all shapes and sizes.

We teach our children to be compassionate. We hope whatever lessons we teach them, stick with them, particularly when they are away from us.

Be kind. Be polite. There is more than one golden rule.

One mother’s mind was put at ease when she received a call regarding her six-year-old son, Max.

On August 22nd, Max was where most kids find themselves as the dog days of summer draw to a close, class.

He was attending Frostproof Elementary School in Frostproof, Florida.

During his kindergarten class, his substitute teacher, Joyce Darr, was bumped by a student.

She fell to the floor and hit her head.

Max wasted no time. He sprang to his feet and ran down the hall looking for help. He went into a nearby classroom.

“We need help!” he yelled.

Thanks to his quick thinking, help arrived and in the knick of time.

When Darr fell, she cracked her skull causing her brain to bleed. It was certainly a life-or-death scenario.

Darr was on life support for 12 days.

Darr’s son, Derek, couldn’t be more grateful.

“You are the real MVP, you’re the most valuable player of this incident here. You saved her life and we need more people like you in this world today,” he said.

Max and his family were invited by Derek to see his mother in the hospital. She and her family were able to thank him for his act of bravery.

She smiled when she saw him. Though she didn’t recall what happened, she heard the stories of courageous little Max.

Derek even bought Max a pair of white Air Jordan’s to show his appreciation.

Derek recalled the moment he was finally able to thank Max personally:

“He loved them, he thanked me, he hugged me. I hugged him probably 20 more times and thanked him 100 more times,” Derek said.

Max’s mom, Monica Aguilar, couldn’t be more proud of her young son.

“… for me, it was very, very exciting. And proud, you know, to be his mom.”

The outpouring of support didn’t stop there. Max was rewarded by the police department as well.

Max was given a Good Citizen’s Award to commemorate his bravery and a bike!

At the ceremony, Aguilar reiterated how proud she was of her son, this time with tears in her eyes and with Max by her side. He looked up to her, beaming at his own hero.

“I’m just so proud of my kid.”

Aguilar said she did her best to instill in him that if something ever happened to his brother, to tell her. That lesson might have aided in Max making the quick decision to get help for his teacher.

Though Darr now teaches as a substitute, she taught at the school for over three decades.

Darr was able to get out of bed earlier this week for the first time since the accident. She is expected to make a full recovery.

Sheriff Judd believes that Max is the model citizen for us all saying:

“If everyone would be like Max, this would be a better world.”

We couldn’t agree more. Max is truly a hero who deserves all of the recognition he has gotten thus far.
