Sometimes, something as simple as a makeover can affect not just the person changing their appearance, but also, their family. One woman, Paula, got to see her adult son Spencer’s emotional reaction when he first saw his mother’s new look.
She had initially contacted the show for Spencer himself.
At the time, he had extremely long hair, and she was worried that his look wasn’t professional. But by the time they got a return call, Spencer had already had to cut his hair for his job. So instead, he decided to turn things around on his mom and get her the makeover she deserved.
“She’s worked all her life for her kids,” he said. “She deserves to have something special for herself.”
The timing was perfect.
Paula and Spencer, along with the rest of their family, were planning on going to a relative’s wedding that November. Both of them wanted to make sure she looked and felt her best.
The biggest thing to tackle?
Paula’s 45 inches of hair that hung well below her waist.
But first, celebrity stylist Clinton Kelly took her shopping to help her find a whole new wardrobe. He was shocked when Paula told him she didn’t think she had worn a dress in as much as 25 years. Kelly helped her find cuts that were flattering to her figure and made her both look and feel fantastic.
“We tried on a few things,” he said. “We’re trying to find something that makes her feel absolutely beautiful.”
Then it was back to the studio for a cut, color, style, and total makeover.
Kelly explained his method for her look before they brought her out for the big reveal.
“Paula’s big concern was her midsection, so we found a way to camouflage that so she feels good about what she is showing,” he said. “We cut off a lot of hair, gave her some beautiful highlights, and now I’m gonna finish up the last bits, like the accessories.”
When Paula walked out onto the stage, Spencer looked like he couldn’t believe his eyes.
Her long hair had been cut to her shoulders and given some snappy light highlights. She was wearing a tiered black dress and firecracker red shoes that made her look like a movie star.
And if you’ve ever doubted the effect that a great makeover can have, just wait until you see Paula’s emotional reaction.
She started to cry before hastily suppressing her tears for the sake of her makeup, Ray and Kelly running in to help her.
“I feel amazing. You know, I came here with no…” Paula had to stop to choke back tears. “I came with no confidence at all. And now…I could walk the red carpet. I feel at ease.”
The cherry on top? Their plane tickets, along with those of their relatives, would be paid for so they could all fly to the wedding. And with Paula’s new look, there is no doubt she will be having a great time.
