Adopting a pet brings joy and happiness to a person, especially someone like Maria Luiza Valcazara who was all alone after moving into a new apartment. She found herself a bit sad all too often, so when she laid eyes on a beautiful black puppy named Chips, she just had to take him home with her.

Maria knew that Chips would make a difference in her life and that he would fill the lonely void she’d been experiencing.

With those soulful eyes, they instantly bonded.

She was a bit nervous leaving Chips home alone in the apartment when she had to go out, worried that his whining and barking would upset the neighbors. The ASPCA explains that separation anxiety is triggered in dogs when they are apart from their loved ones. Some of the common symptoms dogs exhibit due to separation anxiety is having accidents, destructive behavior, pacing, barking and howling.

When Maria returned one day, her fretting over Chips being a disruption to others was realized. There was a note attached to a package sitting outside her door.

She just knew in her heart that she was in trouble and hoped she wouldn’t be evicted from her new apartment. No matter how much she loved her pup, she feared she’d have to get rid of him because he was too noisy when she was gone.

“At the time, I was scared. I wondered who could have left it there at the door, since I had little contact with the people in the building.”

When she opened up the letter, Maria realized that the letter wasn’t addressed to her.

Oddly enough, it was written to Chips. Even stranger — it was written by a dog named Carote, Maria told The Dodo. Maria hesitantly opened the package and discovered that it contained a few dog toys just for Chips. Here’s what the adorable letter said, translated from Portuguese:

“Hi, my friend. I’ve noticed that you’ve been crying a lot when you’re alone, and I’ve been through this phase. I talked to my mom yesterday and together we decided to give you these toys, so you have a distraction when you feel alone. I’m here to make you an invitation: I live alone with Mom and, because of that, I have a room of my own to horse around in as much as I want, so you can spend some time here with me! We can do a lot of partying together!!! We hope you enjoy the things we gave you! Many kisses from Corote and of my mother Nichole.”

Maria couldn’t believe that a complete stranger had taken pity on her and her puppy. She was thrilled that her neighbor wasn’t angry but actually sympathetic.

“When I started to read the letter, I cried a lot.”

Even though Maria hadn’t socialized with anyone in her apartment building and had never met this neighbor, she felt drawn to Nichole and her pooch Corote. She reached out to them and arranged a puppy playdate. Fortunately, all four of them hit it off.

“Nichole offered to help me with Chips whenever I needed it. She gave me some tips she learned from raising Corote.”

Maria’s new friend Nichole not only helped Chips find a new friend, but she has provided Maria with valuable advice to help her tend to Chips’ separation anxiety. Now, the two pairs fraternize and frolic on the front lawn of their apartment building regularly.

“I concluded that there are still good people in our world. It was a beautiful gesture Nichole made for us. And I’m sure other people can benefit through their animals, too. I am an example of this. Besides having a neighbor, I now have a wonderful friend!”
