During the meeting, McNabb got into a heated exchange with Lock Boyce, the chairman of the Board of Supervisors. And while the board decided not to pull funding from the rescue squad, the damage to McNabb had already been done, leading to the rescue squad terminating his employment.

Before his termination, McNabb was initially on unpaid leave. During his suspension, the Virginia Department of Health’s Office of Emergency Medical Services found no substantial evidence to support claims that McNabb had violated JEB Rescue Squad regulations regarding discrimination.

Regardless of these findings, JEB Stuart Rescue Squad decided to terminate McNabb’s employment with the company. The company sited fear in the community about the type of care they could expect to receive from an EMT with such racist views.

According to an attorney for the JEB Stuart Volunteer Rescue Squad, “We never wanted a member of our community to think that they might be mistreated or discriminated against.”

Appearing on the Daily Shoah podcast as character Dr. Narcan, McNabb would often go on racist diatribes where he disparaged blacks and often referred to them by racist slurs. He was also often posted racist updates on his social media accounts. One of the incidents referred to in the complaint included a statement he made on The Daily Shoah in regards to one of the patients he attended to.

“As it turned out, this young African-American male was there to get blood drawn, so guess who volunteered to take his blood?” he told his co-hosts. “Dr. Narcan enjoyed great, immense satisfaction as he terrorized this youngster with a needle and stabbed him thusly in the arm with a large-gauge IV catheter.”

On his now suspended Twitter account, McNabb made countless racist tweets. He also attended the white nationalist march in Charlottesville, Virginia which saw one person killed and 19 others injured. It was partly due to such racist vitriol that the JEB Stuart Volunteer Rescue Squad felt it need to take action and set the minds of its customers at ease.

And while McNabb was fired, racist elements in our society continue to sew division in our communities and among the diverse groups across this country. It is only when we take a stand against such racism that we can begin to make a difference. Here is a video with more on the story.
