There are certain songs that leave you in shivers each time you listen to them. Many would agree that “The Sound of Silence,” hands down, is one of those tunes.

On an episode of The Voice in France, a contestant named Angelo Del Vecchio performed a haunting cover of the Simon & Garfunkel classic during his audition. It too managed to spread chills, and even went viral.

Part of what makes shows like American Idol and The Voice fun is you never know what kind of talent is about to emerge. But what’s even greater are the times a contestant surprises the heck out of you.

When Angelo walked out onto the stage of The Voice : la plus belle voix, likely the audience wasn’t expecting his unique vocal skills. Even the judges too seemed surprised the second he belted out the first lyrics.

It all started with the music to “The Sound of Silence” filling the room. Immediately, one judge appeared to perk up just knowing it would be the song they’d be hearing.

Just a moment later Angelo unleashed his voice – which is deep, rich, and soulful. The looks on the judges’ faces are what clues you in that they were a little caught off guard.

Everyone listened as Angelo sang the lyrics with great passion, which were penned by Paul Simon in the early 1960s. However, at the one-minute mark, he really seemed to crank things up.

With a powerful voice, the contestant belted out:

“And in the naked light I saw – Ten thousand people, maybe more. People talking without speaking – People hearing without listening…”

The mix of Angelo’s talent and the poetic lyrics are enough to leave you sitting in “silence.” Also, let’s not forget he’s singing a song that’s not in his native language, which can’t be an easy feat.

The majority of people might be most familiar with Simon & Garfunkle’s version of “The Sound of Silence” – which who can forget, famously played in the film, The Graduate. However, another group’s version also set the music scene on fire.

In 2015, the heavy metal band Disturbed put their own spin on “The Sound of Silence,” which is sung by frontman David Draiman. Their “darker” version was well-received, and even their video has more than 559 million views on YouTube.

Many viewers of Angelo’s performance on The Voice believe it has more of a resemblance to Disturbed’s version of the song.

While it seems that the judges are definitely intrigued during Angelo’s blind audition, they weren’t reaching out to press their buttons.

But then finally, at the very last second, one red chair finally swivels. It was a close call, yet all it takes is a single judge to advance a contestant to the next round. Frankly, it seemed like Angelo deserved it.

One person wrote on YouTube:

“I don’t know why only one judge turned around. The three others should have checked their ears out.”

Another commenter said:

“Wow! He made me cry! Love from Argentina!”

50 years after “The Sound of Silence” was released, Paul Simon spoke with Smithsonian magazine.

He interestingly told them:

“I still like to sing ‘The Sound of Silence.’ I rate it as one of the best songs I’ve written.”

Maybe it confirms why we all get goosebumps every time we listen to it too!
