In days of the past teens might be known to gather together for a game of football or to skip rocks across the pond, but times are different now. Newer generations are becoming known for acting without thinking, engaging in ridiculous acts such as the Tide Pod Challenge. The compulsion of our youth to act without thinking is astounding.
Recently a group of teens took it too far – they endangered a popular tourist population with a simple act of empty headedness. The inhabitants of North Yorkshire, England, are raging at the teenagers who have yet to be identified.
This place is home to the Brimham Rocks, a masterpiece of naturally sculpted rock formations that has withstood the test of time for the past 320 million years.
The rocks were carved by wind, rain, and ice in a beautiful process that took thousands of lifetimes. Their latest shape, however, is due to a much more recent event.
The last glacial period, the Devensian glaciation, has shaped the rocks into their current forms. This site is a testament to the power of nature as it shows what can happen when the elements take control.
The Brimham Rocks eventually became a National Trust landmark, and they were deemed an Area of Outstanding Beauty. Their strange shapes are quite impressive, and tourists flock from all over the world to see them. Or at least, they did.
This notorious group of teens has ruined the fun for everyone. They acted out what they must have thought was a prank, and in doing so they changed the place forever.
“At around 8.45pm on Friday, 1 June a group of five young people were seen pushing a rock at the top of one of the crags,” the North Yorkshire Police reported.
The kids obviously thought it would be funny to push the rock around. I’m sure they never guessed what would happen next – the incalculable damage that they caused with their poor judgement.
“This resulted in the rock falling from the crag causing damage to the crag face. The damage this has caused is irreplaceable and it is now in a potentially dangerous condition.”
The police have several reasons for wanting the children in their custody. They have destroyed public property, and they have even proven that they are a danger to themselves.
“The incident has not only caused considerable damage to both the rock and the crag face, but those responsible also put themselves in danger and have created a potential hazard for other visitors to Brimham Rocks,” the police stated.
Many people are angered by this catastrophe, assuming that the teens intentionally destroyed the crag face. One such woman is Helen Clark, a representative from the National Trust, who remarked, “It might have been fun for some people. Actually, it is just completely pointless and needless.”
Astonishingly, no witnesses have yet come forward regarding the group of teenagers spotted that night. They are still unidentified, leaving the world to wonder who they might be.
The North Yorkshire Police are asking for information related to the suspects.
“If you have any information about the identity of those responsible please contact officers on 101, choosing option 2 and quote reference 12180097959,” The police have announced. “Alternatively, email [email protected].”
The teens may not have been seen on the night of the destruction, but they certainly left their mark. In addition to breaking the rock and the crag face, they also vandalized the area.
Names were scratched into the rock near the scene of the crime. Many internet observers hope that those who are responsible for this destruction are brought to justice.
Whether or not the teens intentionally destroyed the rock, it is a tragedy that this beautiful place has become unsafe for future visitors. This story is the perfect reminder of why we need to teach our youth the value of respecting nature.
