Taking in children through adoption or foster care is a great opportunity to give a child a home.
It can be tricky in that you might never get the full story of what the child has gone through. A lot of these children have been through a lot of heartache in search of finding a family that they could call their own.
One woman decided that taking in children and giving them just that was her true passion.
Katie Page, of Colorado, made a life-changing decision when she divorced her husband in her early 30s. Not feeling fulfilled, she moved to a new house and changed careers.
Continuing on the trajectory of her new life’s journey, she took an opportunity presented to her by her pastor.
After some thought, Katie heeded his advice and began to look into how to become a foster parent.
She attended meetings to better prepare herself.
“What I heard that evening about foster care gave me chills and scared me, but it also pulled at my heart in a way I couldn’t stop thinking about it.”
Katie fostered four children. She enjoyed it so much she began to think about adopting.
The opportunity came in 2016 when she received a call from a caseworker about a little boy who was left at a hospital. It was likely a foster-to-adopt situation, just what Katie was looking for.
“I immediately called her back and said, ‘I want him! Give me five minutes and please don’t call anyone else,'” she recalled.
The baby was a newborn. Katie took him home when he was just four-days-old. The boy didn’t have a name so she named him Grayson.
The next 11 months were tense as there were several attempts to contact the boy’s mother and father. But to Katie’s fortune, nobody came forward to claim baby Grayson. She was conflicted with this realization.
“…there was always a pit in my stomach about one day having to tell my son no one showed up at his termination hearing. No one came looking.”
When Grayson turned 11 months old, the court terminated his biological parent’s birthrights.
Katie thought it best to wait before bringing in another child into her home. But two weeks later, she got a call about a four-day-old little girl who was left at the same hospital as Grayson. She couldn’t turn a blind eye.
“I was overwhelmed at the thought. Yet the feeling also told me to keep listening and to consider this placement. Something was different about this one.”
When the little girl arrived, Katie noticed the bracelet on her arm had the same name as the woman that was on Grayson’s bracelet. The birthdate the woman gave was also similar to the date given by the woman who brought him in.
The date was off only by a day.
At first glance, Grayson and the little girl didn’t look very much alike. He was half black with curly, dark hair and the girl was white with straight, blonde hair. But, they were also very young. Katie went with her instincts.
The birth mom of the little girl wanted visits and custody so when it was time to bring the little girl in for a visit, Katie inquired about Grayson.
It turned out, Katie’s intuition was right all along. Later, the caseworker confirmed that Grayson and the little girl were siblings.
The little girl, who Katie named Hannah, officially joined the family in December 2018.
Katie and her family continue to grow as Grayson and Hannah’s biological mother just gave birth to another boy, Lucas, who Katie hopes to make an official member of their family as well.
