Most of us can only imagine the heartbreak of losing a child. But Marie Robinson from Waterlooville, England knows exactly how it feels after losing her son Jack on April 1, 2014.

Jack had an aggressive form of brain cancer which had only been diagnosed about 3 months before he died at the young age of four.

At the time, his story touched the hearts of thousands of readers in the UK after the family got the news and Jack even received a special hospital visit from his favorite singer and a video message from Matt Smith, who played the Doctor in Doctor Who.

When Jack passed away, he was given an elaborate Star Wars-themed funeral and his body arrived in a Star Wars coffin on a white horse-drawn carriage surrounded by Stormtroopers.

In 2017, on the third anniversary of Jack’s death, Robinson was having a particularly hard week coping with her loss. She decided to visit his grave and recalls asking for “a sign.”

She later told Mirror Online:

“Early Saturday morning I got in the car and said out loud, ‘Jack, please show Mummy a sign’ and thought I’ll see him after I finished work. At 1 pm I left work and walked up to his resting place. I was overcome with emotion and I sat on the grass next to Jack.”

While she sat next to her son’s grave, Robinson got her sign from Jack and the video she took of the moment that brought her comfort has now been viewed millions of times across social media, including almost 3 million views on YouTube and 7 million views when it was hosted on Robinson’s Facebook page.

The video shows Robinson sitting at Jack’s grave being watched by a little robin (of the European variety), who then flits over to visit with her in a most unexpected and atypical way.

The bird even lands on her hand for quite a while, maintaining complete calm.

You can hear the emotion in Robinson’s voice as she talks to the little robin through tears, telling it how sweet it is as it chirps back at her.

While robins can be friendly birds, especially in the UK where they are routinely hand fed by gardeners, Robinson didn’t offer the bird any food.

In fact, the bird seemed intent on simply visiting with her, flying around her and trying to land on her. It initially landed on her foot.

When it flew over to a nearby headstone, that’s when Robinson got out her phone to begin filming the encounter.

As if on cue, the robin flew back, ready for its close-up.

“He kept looking at me directly in my face and at one point he landed on my shoulder and nibbled me a couple of times.”

While her page is now private, that’s where the grieving mother first shared the video and story, saying:

“Can’t believe what’s just happened, come to see my precious boy Jack – just sat down on ground next to him and this happened. Yes it brought me to tears. Taking it as a sign from Jack.”

Before she took down her Facebook page, The Dodo reports that Robinson posted a follow-up message to those who had watched her video, sent their best wishes, and remarked on the various things that robins have symbolized throughout history, from family to renewal.

“Would like to say if my little robin footage can help raise awareness of childhood brain tumors, cancers, the grief of losing a child then it’s a positive thing. I have read loads and loads of heartfelt messages from loads of people. It is unbelievable how much a robin symbolizes in a lot of people’s messages.”
