With the cost of senior care facilities continuing to rise, some business savvy elderly folks are saying enough is enough.
They’ve crunched the numbers and what they’ve discovered is pretty shocking. When you consider how much money you are spending per day, it turns out that there are much better deals to be found by looking outside the traditional eldercare system.
One such man who made this discovery recently was senior Terry Robison.
In a fascinating Facebook Post, he told the world why he has now decided to stay long-term in a Holiday Inn instead of a nursing home.
“No nursing home for us. We’ll be checking into a Holiday Inn! With the average cost for a nursing home care costing $188.00 per day, there is a better way when we get old and too feeble,” Robison said in his post.”
“I’ve already checked on reservations at the Holiday Inn. For a combined long term stay discount and senior discount, it’s $59.23 per night. Breakfast is included, and some have happy hours in the afternoon.”
$188 per day is a very lofty sum of money, even for the most well off of seniors.
After doing the math, Robison found out that it simply made a lot more sense to check himself permanently into a hotel instead, but what made the decision easy was how much money he would have leftover for other activities after paying for the room.
“That leaves $128.77 a day for lunch and dinner in any restaurant we want, or room service, laundry, gratuities and special TV movies. Plus, they provide a spa, swimming pool, a workout room, a lounge and washer-dryer, etc.” Robison said.
“Most have free toothpaste and razors, and all have free shampoo and soap. $5-worth of tips a day and you’ll have the entire staff scrambling to help you.”
You can basically get all the same nursing home benefits, however, at a fraction of the cost.
He goes on to add that as far as transportation goes, many hotels provide various types of free shuttles, and even when that fails, you can still take a city bus to get where you need to go. One of his cool tricks for going on excursions is the hotel’s airport shuttle.
“For a change of scenery, take the airport shuttle bus and eat at one of the nice restaurants there. While you’re at the airport, fly somewhere. Otherwise, the cash keeps building up. “
Another good point he makes is that elderly care facilities often have long waitlists and can be very difficult to get into.
“It takes months to get into decent nursing homes. Holiday Inn will take your reservation today. And you’re not stuck in one place forever — you can move from Inn to Inn, or even from city to city. Want to see Hawaii? They have Holiday Inn there too.”
By using Robison’s strategy, you can basically just up and leave to head off to the next city or town whenever you want. It’s a pretty smart idea really, and it’s surprising that more seniors aren’t doing it.
For health care, Robison has Medicare, and he added that the daily room service and night security at the hotel means there is always someone there to check in on you and call for medical attention if you ever need it.
He also said that he likes how easy it makes for relatives to visit him. Family can just stay at the same hotel as him, and the grandkids love it because they get to use the pool.
Robison ends his post with an inspiring message:
“What more could I ask for? So, when I reach that golden age, I’ll face it with a grin.”
It is certainly a very interesting solution to the problem of rising nursing home costs. Terry Robison has found an ingenious way to beat the system.
