For some of us, eating out is a luxury. So, when we do so we want to make sure that it’s a really good meal that’s as good, if not better, than something we’d make at home.
But imagine spending $600 on a single meal?
That better be the best damn meal of your life! And for one Imgur user, who goes by the name Hoptail, it was. The college student saved up some money and decided to treat herself to an exotic and pricey meal at one of the most expensive restaurant’s in the U.S, Saison in San Francisco.
She indulged in dishes like antelope, sea urchin, and smoked ice cream (whatever that is), geoduck (which we just found out is a terrifying and phallic looking clam), and desserts covered in 24K gold.
“Honestly this was an awesome experience and, for me, well worth the money,” she wrote on Imgur. “The staff were absolutely amazing. At first I felt a bit slighted because I had to sit at the bar by myself instead of being given my own table, but Anthony the barman has the most incredible liquid nitrogen cocktail making theatrics that I was kept well entertained throughout the evening. If you’re nice, he may offer you a taste of his clarified milk punch or roasted buckwheat tea (both of which are amazing).”
Prepare to feast your eyes on the most Instagram-worthy meal you’ve ever seen…
That’s cup of hot meyer lemon water with steeped douglas fir, yarrow, chamomile, lemon balm, anise, and hyssop fresh from the restaurant’s farm.
“This was, no joke, the most heavenly tea I’ve ever had in my life and could quite cheerfully drink this every day until I died,” she says.
She had that cup filled throughout the entire four-hour meal.
“Up next, baby spinach, roasted kelp cooked in clarified butter (compliments of their jersey cow Bella) and topped with proprietary caviar – some specific type that you can only have there,” she explains.
“Sashimi was amazing. I don’t want to sound like an idiot using stupid gastronomic buzzwords, but the “mouthfeel” (nerrrrr) was like the most tender, buttery squid you’ve ever had in your life,” she describes. “I shed tears knowing that I’d peaked and would never experience better raw fish after this moment. “
Next up was the geoduck you see below which was not her fav due to the texture.
The next dish, however, blew her mind. Creamy sea urchin on grilled bread based in a delicious sauce.
Next came dishes of sliced radish with clarified butter, roasted pumpkin three ways, one of which was topped with octopus flakes.
“This is antelope,” she says of the picture above. “It came with stuffed radicchio, herb salad and really nice biscuits and honey butter that tasted like pancakes.”
Then came time for multiple desserts which included a smoked ice cream covered in salted caramel with yummy fixings like candied walnuts, peanuts, cacao nibs, and pine nuts.
It was so good she was calling out for Jesus.
“Praise Jesus, my palette has been blessed. Amen.”
That beauty right there is the Saison “Snickers” bar, a secret off-menu item that she found out about after making friends with the right waiter.
“Some sort of dark chocolate and nut brownie base, salted caramel centre, chocolate ganache and topped with 24K gold – because why not do that when you’re the second most expensive restaurant in the country,” she explains.
