We often think of celebrities as being distant from us normal people. You aren’t likely to see a celeb while running errands or grabbing your morning coffee. In fact, you aren’t likely to see one in person at all, unless you have tickets to a concert or show. But sometimes celebrities surprise us.

They leave the safety of wherever it is they spend all their time, and they enter the public view. Of course, when people on the street spot a celebrity, the crowd is bound to gather. That’s exactly what happened when Rod Stewart gave a surprise performance at London’s Piccadilly Circus.

It was a cold winter day, and passersby shuffled on to their jobs, their lunch meetings, or their other important destinations. Meanwhile a street performer went about his daily business. He was singing in front of a handful of people, but that was all about to change.

Suddenly Rod Stewart stepped up to the microphone. People weren’t paying much attention, but once he started to sing, everything was different. As the people walking the streets of London started to recognize Rod’s voice, the crowd got bigger and bigger.

Rod stood there – in the middle of the square – and gave an outstanding performance of “Handbags and Gladrags.” The song, written by Mike d’Abo in 1967, gained widespread popularity almost instantly. Within just a few years several artists had released their versions of the song, including Chris Farlowe, Stereophonics, and Rod Stewart himself.

Rod’s street performance was simply brilliant. The people cheered, clapped, and even started recording the artist. They just couldn’t get enough! By the end of the song, Rod and his upcoming fellow artist were entertaining a large crowd.

When he had finished singing, the man explained that he was here “for a very noble cause.” He apologized that he would miss the upcoming ceremonies, and he wished everyone in the crowd “good luck with the project.”

Rod was referring to the commemoration for the Armistice centenary that would take place the following evening. The event, put on by TMW Unlimited, would create a visual display of bright lights in memory of the countless British soldiers who had given their lives for the cause in World War I.

Rod is simply amazing – there’s no denying it. It is incredible that someone with so much success could stay down-to-earth enough to join a street performer in his endeavor. Rod is definitely a unique celeb, but he isn’t the only one who has surprised an audience.

Other artists have also popped up to make a street performer’s day. Steven Tyler stood in the crowd like an ordinary person as he listened to a young man perform a cover of “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” by Aerosmith. After a few lines, Steven himself walked into the center of the crowd and jammed with this aspiring artist. He prompted the performer to keep singing, and even to take over at times! He definitely gave that young artist a memory to keep for a lifetime.

Ed Sheeran has gotten in on the fun as well. When he saw a young girl performing his “Thinking Out Loud” he just knew he had to join her. The two paired up for an amazing duet. It is so heartwarming to watch this girl’s face light up as her favorite celebrity walks up to her to be a part of her performance.

Plenty of other celebs have surprised the public. Maybe they are much more down to earth than we might think. To see more beautiful moments like this, watch this video.

If nothing else, these awesome stories are proof that good things come to those who follow their dreams. No matter what it is you want to succeed in, just start doing it – you never know what amazing adventures will happen along the way.
