Roses are absolutely beautiful. Not only do they come in all sorts of amazing colors, but they are also probably the most romantic type of flower out there. However, because of high demand, purchasing them isn’t always cheap. As one man discovered, sometimes it pays to grow your own. He figured out a cool trick that makes growing roses super easy, and the good news is that no special gardening knowledge is required.

In fact, all you need is a small patch of dirt, some potatoes, and a little patience.

That’s right, we said potatoes!

First, you’ll want to dig a 6×12 inch hole in your garden or the section of your yard where you will be growing the flowers.

It should be about 6 inches deep and preferably located in a partially shaded area. Roses don’t do well in direct sunlight. You’ll also want to line the bottom of the hole with a small layer of sand to help trap in moisture.

Gather some live rose stems either from a garden, or a store-bought bouquet.

The fresher the better. A small investment on some roses up front will pay big dividends down the road.

Next, remove all the leaves and thorns from the bottom section of the stems.

This is the part that seems a little strange, but trust us, it really works!

Go gather up some potatoes, one for each rose stem.

Make a small hole in each potato and insert the rose stems into them. Make sure that the holes are not too big. You want the stem to fit securely without any wobble room.

Place the potatoes into the hole you dug in the ground with the rose stems facing up. These are your rose “seeds”.

What is the purpose of the potatoes, you might ask? It turns out, the potatoes act as a great source of nutrition for the growing roses. They also help to provide them with the perfect amount of water. Essentially, it’s like a natural fertilizer.

Next, you’ll want to cover the stems with some fresh soil so that only a few inches remain above ground.

Lightly pack the earth down around each stem using your boot.

Now, there’s nothing left to do but wait. This is where the patience part of the process comes into effect. However, it won’t take as long as you might expect.

Within a few weeks, your roses should begin to grow and blossom.
