When Jamie Pugh first auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent, he was up against some amazing competition.

Now this famous talent show had a new contestant before them who was obviously very nervous.

It was quite clear from the beginning that Jamie was overcome with debilitating stage fright, which Simon could smell from a mile away.

When Simon asked if he was scared, Jamie quietly admitted that he was. Even though the audience laughed at his response, he still managed to step out of his comfort zone and find the courage to perform.

Like Susan Boyle so famously did before him, Jamie managed to captivate everyone’s attention within seconds of belting out his first note.

Jamie had all the ingredients of a feel-good story. He was just your average guy who drove a van by day and delivered pizzas by night, and like everyone else in this world, he felt like there was more to life than just eking out an ordinary existence.

He knew that he could sing, but the only problem was he was too scared to actually be seen and heard.

His only goal for his performance on BGT was to get through the three-minute audition without having a panic attack and collapsing from stage fright.

Conquering ones fears takes pure grit, but giving a spine-tingling performances is 100% pure talent.

Just because the show is called Britain’s Got Talent doesn’t mean that everyone who steps onto the stage actually has any. BGT has seen it’s share of awful singers, and it’s always hit or miss when a contestant tells the judges that they’re going to sing.

Simon was a bit surprised at Jamie’s choice of song, but was surprisingly cheerful and non-judgmental in his response.

And when the bashful Welshman softly crooned a touching rendition of “Bring Him Home” from Les Misérables, no one wanted to cover their ears.

In this season, there were only three judges instead of the now familiar four on Britain’s Got Talent, with Simon, Amanda Holden, and Piers Morgan making up the judging panel.

Now, let’s discuss Piers for a moment. Everyone thinks Simon is always the bad guy, but back then, there was more than one surly, too-honest-for-his-own-good judge handing out votes.

Piers famously made a little girl run crying off the stage when he gave her the buzzer just 2 seconds after she started to perform.

This time around, though, Piers looked past the shyness and had nothing but nice things to say about Jamie’s singing:

“I’ve gotta say, Jamie, I was not expecting that kind of performance from you. You haven’t performed in this kind of arena ever, you deliver pizzas at night, for goodness sake, and you come on this stage, one of the biggest talent shows in the world, and you do a performance like that – I thought that was incredible.”
