Dog rescuers are true heroes. Their jobs may not always be as risky as firefighters or police but that doesn’t mean that they don’t put themselves in dangerous situations to fulfill their duties.
One of these awesome people is Donna from the Stray Rescue of St. Louis in Missouri. Check out one of her most recent missions rescuing a trapped pit bull from an abandoned home.
Only Way Out
The rescuer was made aware that a dog has been spotted through a second-floor window of an abandoned local home. It’s believed that the animal has already been trapped up there for two weeks when the rescue center received the call.
Seeing the situation, the experienced volunteer rescuer immediately started finding ways to get into the building. Donna was initially baffled as to how the dog even got in there in the first place, seeing how the place was all boarded up.
She eventually found a way in through a small basement window which she fearlessly jumped through. Inside, she discovered a scene that confirmed the building had been abandoned for a very long time.
There was trash strewn everywhere and the stairs looked like they might cave in at any second. But Donna soldiered on carefully and began checking every room to find the poor dog.
She soon found her way upstairs where she finally found the scared and emaciated animal.
Earning Peeps’ Trust
The pit bull seemed extremely cautious when he was first approached by Donna. Fortunately, the rescuer knew exactly what to do to gain his trust. Speaking softly, she started coaxing the cowering dog telling and him that he would be fine.
She then brought out what looked to be a can of sausages and started giving the dog pieces so she could get close to him. Finally, the pit bull warmed up to her a bit. This enabled her to get a leash around his neck.
The two slowly made their way down the stairs and out the abandoned house through the same window Donna had entered.
Donna believes that the dog probably originally jumped into the window and was trapped because he couldn’t jump high enough to reach it again.
Once safely in the vehicle, Donna immediately noticed the dog’s beautiful yellow eyes and christened him as Peeps. He’s currently living in the rescue’s shelter where he’s finally getting the care he needs.
It turns out, we weren’t the only one impressed at how well Donna handled Peeps’ rescue. The organization usually posts videos of their rescues on their YouTube channel and it looks like Donna is quite popular among their viewers. She has received tons or likes as well as well-deserved praise in the comments section.
The organization she volunteers for has a mission is to provide a compassionate environment for abandoned, neglected, or abused animals and connect them to new owners who will love them unconditionally.
The Stray Rescue of St. Louis is currently the biggest organization in the city that has a no-kill policy.
We think they are doing an amazing job. Not only are they taking care of dogs that are brought to them, but they also go the extra mile such as in cases like this.
