You’ve seen sprawling mansions, modern apartments, stylish lofts, and the quaintest of tiny houses, but have you ever been given a tour of a home right on the sea?
That’s right. On the sea. Not a beachfront property or a charming house on the end of a wooden boardwalk.
A curious and attractive home that can only be reached by water.
This is what Wayne Adams and Catherine King were able to achieve out of being creative, dreaming big, and working together.
Wayne is a carver who always hoped to earn well as an artist. Since he and his partner Catherine, a dancer, couldn’t really buy real estate, they decided to build their own home. Catherine’s desire to settle in a calm and peaceful place helped inspire the idea of constructing a home right on the sea.
Wayne shared,
“I was hoping to make a lot more money as an artist. We could never buy real estate, so we had to make our own.”
Called the “Freedom Cove”, their own piece of paradise floats off the coast of Vancouver Island.
“I had lived in the big city, I knew what that was like. I really needed the peace of the wilderness,” Catherine explained.
Before all this, the couple used to live in a Tofino apartment. But they really dreamed of having a place they could call their own. And in order to take the first step towards reaching their dream, they decided to give away their possessions and gather recycled materials that could be used in constructing a home that can only be described as one of a kind.
Fortunately, Wayne’s experience in building tree houses growing up proved useful in building their house on the sea, a safe space that’s 45 minutes away from the town.
Big on teamwork, he and Catherine are constantly working on improvements and maintaining their home the best way they can.
If you’re wondering how they manage to sustain their needs, you’ll be impressed to know that their Freedom Cove (which weighs a million pounds) has everything: four greenhouses, a dance floor, candle factory, art gallery, and even solar panels and a floating tank for waste management. The couple sure thought of everything!
Definitely a clever way to go about sustainable living.
Apart from the greenhouses where they grow their own food, Wayne either catches their dinner in a canoe or stays in the living room to fish. That’s right, Wayne can fish right in their living room, thanks to a clever plexiglass opening. Who knew one could go fishing while sitting on a comfortable couch, snacking and enjoying a TV program or a relaxing playlist?
Their work of art has not only resulted in an awesome living space that promises peace and privacy, but it has also proven that amazing things can happen when you combine your creative ideas and work hard together. You’ll surely want a glimpse of their hideout on the sea. Perhaps it may even inspire you to start working on your dream home, too!
There’s really nothing like being in a remote place surrounded by nature.
