Dogs are the ultimate pet.
They’re fun, loyal, supportive, and gosh-darn adorable.
But what really sets dogs apart from other pets is their personality.
A dog’s personality can range all over the spectrum from goofy and quirky to stoic and reserved depending on the dog’s breed and its current mood.
Some breeds tend towards the reserved side, while others are all about play, baby.
Bulldogs, for the most part, are pretty goofy little guys.
My buddy has one and his name is Clyde.
Whenever anyone walks in the door, Clyde gets his little feet turning and zips and shuffles around the hardwood floor.
He slips and slides and bangs into things, hoping that the newcomer will join in on the fun and run around with him.
If that doesn’t work, he’ll find his favorite toy of the afternoon and bring it over to you, shaking it back and forth in his mouth and breathing load and heavy as bulldogs do.
I can’t say that I’ve ever met a bulldog that didn’t have a huge personality.
It’s as if they are making up for their small size in that way.
But that small size can come in handy, especially for one bulldog in particular.
When this little guy needs to cool down, he knows exactly where to go–the fridge.
Small enough to fit into the bottom drawer section, he waddles over to the fridge and waits for the door to be opened by his owners.
When the door comes open, he climbs in, spins around, and lays down, taking in the sweet and satisfying cool air.
And just so you know, this bulldog isn’t high-maintenance or spoiled and fridge-time isn’t just a luxury for him.
Bulldogs are actually not very good at regulating their own temperature.
According to Three Million Dogs, “Bulldogs are a unique breed in more ways than one, but one of the most important characteristics to note is their tendency to become overheated. Since bulldogs don’t pant as much as ordinary dogs due to their short snouts, they can’t maintain normal body temperature as easily.”
If I had a little guy that couldn’t keep cool on his own, I would let him into the fridge anytime he wanted.
Because the unfortunate truth about french bulldogs is that they are very prone to health issues.
The biggest factor driving these issues is selective breeding.
While french bulldogs could be bred in order to weed-out the genetic health issues, they are often bred just for their looks instead.
That means that the desirable traits that we often associate with bulldogs are the exact source of their problems.
According to Frenchie Wiki, “French Bulldogs are commonly bred for their appearance, with a flat, smushed-in face and a short, stocky appearance being desirable. The problem with breeding solely for looks is that it can bring in a host of unwanted characteristics such as breathing difficulties, hip dysplasia, and spinal disorders.”
So if you plan on getting a bulldog of your own, make sure to be aware of their common health issues and be prepared to pay some pricey vet bills.
But if you’re set on a bulldog, don’t let that deter you.
They are fun-loving, loyal, and hilarious pets.
Just as long as you don’t forget to open up the fridge on those extra hot days.
