I need this in my office!

They say that people basically live at the office these days.

With average workweek hours increasing every year, it is no surprise that companies are working on new ways to meet the challenges involved with personal and work life becoming more and more intertwined.

If you’re commuting to work in one of bigger cities, you’ve also probably experienced the giant disaster that is the US transportation system. There is nothing that will get your blood pumping quite like a one or two-hour car ride to work every morning in stand-still traffic.

Luckily, one Greek designer, Nancy Leivaditou of Studio NL, has come up with a very innovative solution — a desk that also functions as a bed!

They are calling it the nap desk (we are calling it that). No longer do you have to worry about that soul-sucking commute anymore. In fact, with the nap desk, you can literally just live at the office!

On a more serious note, Studio NL officially advertises the piece of furniture a bit differently.

They named it the “1.6 S.M. of Life Desk”, a stylish workspace that transforms into a bed. The 1.6 stands for the desk’s dimensions, 2 by 0.8 meters.

NL Studio described the project in detail over at Archilovers:

“The main concept was to comment on the fact that many times our lives are “shrinking” in order to fit into the confined space of our office. Eventually, I realized that each civilization may have a very different perception of things depending on its social context. For example, this desk could be used for a siesta or for a few hours of sleep at night on those days when someone struggles to meet deadlines.”

According to the description, it is made of metal, lacquered wood, solid wood, and white leather.

Leivaditou came up with the idea while trying to get work done in her tiny and cramped New York office.

The Life Desk is basically a two-in-one deal. With tiny spaces becoming the new norm as real estate costs continue to soar, multi-function pieces of furniture are certainly slated to become more popular in the future.

While you might not want to actually move into your workplace quite yet, a nap desk certainly is an interesting concept.

Whenever you get tired and need a break, just transform your desk into a bed and take a little snooze. Just don’t get caught by the boss!

It reminds us of a funny scene from Seinfeld, when George Constanza decides to start taking naps at the office under his desk.

Although, if you watch the clip, you’ll see that in his situation he was simply just sleeping on the floor. Unfortunately for George, nap desks hadn’t been invented yet. He does eventually get caught, too, and in a pretty hilarious fashion.

Honestly, we can certainly see the appeal of a nap desk, but the fact is that unless you can somehow get your boss’s approval, it is probably best for a work-at-home setup.

If you are trying to make the most of a tiny home office space, the 1.6 S.M. of Life Desk is definitely worthy of consideration.

See the picture below for the step-by-step breakdown of how to use a nap desk.
