When you’re a student, lunchtime is one of the best times of the day. Sitting down in the cafeteria to eat a meal presents a small opportunity to escape from studying for a moment and simply relax.
At least, in theory, that’s how it works, but occasionally school lunch doesn’t always go as planned.
That’s what the students eating at the UNASP-EC University in Brazil found out recently when they were surprised by a giant flash mob.
The students were all happily chatting with friends and enjoying their break from class when all of a sudden a man with a microphone got up from his table and started singing.
“Can you find me…” the man said.
Immediately, dozens of other students stood up and echoed back in perfect harmony — “somebody to love?”.
The whole cafeteria turned towards them to try and see what was going on. It turns out, it was the group Academia da Voz. In English, that stands for “Academy of Voice”. They began performing a beautiful rendition of Queen song “Somebody to Love”, and no one could believe what was happening.
Normally, flash mobs are made up of people doing crazy impromptu dances.
However, this group of singers was actually incredibly good and the only dancing involved was done by students walking by on their way to pick up their food. We have to say, the group’s voices were simply angelic. The performance was something you would expect in an expensive concert hall, not in a random university cafeteria. However, we imagine that was the point.
The idea of a flash mob is to catch a group of unsuspecting people off guard with some kind of random performance and Academia da Voz certainly succeeded on that front.
For a solid 5+ minutes, the group belted out their heartfelt lyrics with incredible skill and precision.
Together, their voices formed an incredible harmony that must have taken so much practice and time to prepare. A few minutes in, they were even joined by a talented drummer and guitarist who helped them to keep the tempo.
By the end of the performance, the whole cafeteria was clapping and cheering them all on.
If only Freddie Mercury could have been there to witness the group. He would have loved it.
“Do anything you want with my music dear, but never make me boring!” Freddie Mercury once said.
It’s not an exact quote, but it goes something like that. The group definitely wasn’t boring. In fact, they were the complete opposite. No one could take their eyes off of the dozens of singers.
As soon as the song ended though, just like that, they all disappeared into the crowds of people watching.
Within seconds, everyone returned to eating their lunches, and for someone just entering the cafeteria at that moment, it would have been like the performance never happened.
However, those that were there that day to witness it can verify that it did indeed occur. In addition, the flash mob was recorded and the video was uploaded to YouTube for the whole world to watch. It has since gone on to accumulate over a million views and it’s something that you have to check out for yourself.
