There’s something about a baby animal that has a magnet-like effect on us humans. Having the chance to get up-close with a miniature version of a full-size cat, dog, sheep, giraffe – whatever it might be – is just too adorable to resist.

Newborn horses are no exception. They’ve yet to grow into their bodies, which gives them a slightly comical, all-legs appearance that makes them all the more loveable.

Being still fairly dependant on their mothers, foals don’t always trust the humans who meanwell. And when that happens, as this video proves, mom is always there to rush to their side and offer them the protection they’re looking for.

The video was posted to YouTube by a dad whose job it is to take care of an 18th-century estate. He calls his workplace his “paradise” – and it’s easy to see why, when he’s surrounded by animals every day.

Alongside videos of chicks and cats hanging out together, newborn calves, bulls, snow geese, dogs, and an osprey, the clip that caught the most attention of them all is one that documents what happens when an 11-day-old foal comes out of the stables to meet his wife and daughters.

The foal, being a typically nosey baby animal, has come to check out the new arrivals.

She’s cautious, but not too much, allowing mom and her children to get quite close to her. Her long legs and short tail are an amusing sight, especially as her legs have white markings above the hooves, like socks pulled up at different lengths.

Though the family don’t try to pet the foal, she must get a little nervous, because she lets out a high-pitched whinny and turns away from her new friends.

The sound isn’t very loud, but mom must be on alert. In the distance, there’s a clear echoing whinny that comes from mom herself.

Then we hear another whinny, and the man behind the camera warns his family to move out of the way as the sound of clip-clopping hooves becomes louder and louder.

The family step to the side, and mom struts onto the scene. She’s a majestic sight – large, powerful body streaked with sand; a well-tamed mane and tail. When mom stands alongside her baby, it’s clear just how much growing the foal still has to do.

At her mom’s arrival, the little horse turns and heads off to the back of the stables with her. The two clearly have a very close bond, and mom isn’t quite ready to let her baby have full independence yet!

The video, which has more than 4 million views, has attracted some pretty hilarious comments as people give their own take on what the foal might have been communicating in her whinny.

While someone else continued the scene onwards, commenting:

“Baby: MOMMA! – Mom: OH HELL NO YOU DID NOT TOUCH MY BABY!”

One commenter saw the mom of more as a protective disciplinary type, writing:

“Mom: THERE you are! If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times – No playing in the barn by yourself! You wait ’til I tell your father.”
