Judges on The Voice Kids Australia weren’t able to see nine-year-old Molly when she took the stage. Yet, it didn’t take long for them to be impacted by her rendition of a song that carries a deep meaning.

Choosing the right tune to audition with is important on reality shows like The Voice and American Idol. For Molly, she chose to wow everyone with Kasey Chambers’ “Not Pretty Enough.”

Molly was likely full of nerves before her blind audition. It’s a huge opportunity to become a contestant on any of the TV talent programs, as they’ve catapulted many “average” people into lives of fame.

When Molly began singing, “Not Pretty Enough,” all of the judges cried out a little in awe.

She belted out the powerful lyrics,

“Am I not pretty enough – is my heart too broken. Do I cry too much – am I too outspoken.”

For a show like The Voice, it was actually a tiny bit ironic of a song choice. The purpose of offering blind auditions is so that contestants can initially be chosen by their musical abilities – and not their looks.

On the show’s site they explain:

“The coaches hear the artists perform, but they don’t get to see them — thanks to rotating chairs.”

Everyone listened closely to the small girl’s voice as she performed. At one point, judge Mel B couldn’t resist any longer, hitting her red button so she could spin her chair around.

That was when she got to finally see Molly for the first time. She exclaimed, “Adorable!”

Molly’s family couldn’t hold back their excitement while watching from behind the scenes. Even having just one coach turn is a huge deal, for it means she’d be able to move to the next round of the competition.

“Not Pretty Enough” is a country-pop track by Kasey Chambers. When Song Facts interviewed the Australian artist, she explained her original inspiration for writing it.

“I wrote it about not fitting into the music industry and feeling uncomfortable in such a superficial industry. Feeling like I would never fit into mainstream radio. Ironically, it became a radio hit in Australia on mainstream radio and went to #1 on the pop charts.”

Kasey then went on to say:

“Not Pretty Enough” started out being about not fitting into the music industry, but is now more about just general insecurities that everyone feels at different times about different things. It has got me through a lot of things and I love knowing that it’s helped other people through all the different times in their lives. That is the beauty of music.”

A lot of people were moved watching Molly belt out “Not Pretty Enough.” The Madden Brothers eventually slammed their button as well, coming face to face with the little songstress.

The only judge not to turn for Molly’s performance was musical artist, Delta Goodrem. Later, the youngster actually admits that Delta was the coach she had hoped to work with!

Fortunately, Molly had two excellent teams she could choose between. Mel B tried to convince her by saying,

“I think we could work together really, really well. I’m a girl – you’re a girl. I have four kids that are girls. So if I was you, from girl to girl, I would go with me.”

In the end, she did in fact pick Mel B to be her coach! It’s a memorable audition that’s been viewed more than 40 million times.
