Seeing wild animals up close for the first time is a very memorable experience.
As a kid, trips to the local zoo were always a treat for me.
It instilled a love for animals that still exists in me to this day.
I remember wanting to sit and watch the big cats for hours on end–I just couldn’t get enough.
For one little girl, it wasn’t the big cats that grabbed her attention, but the big apes.
In the video below, she can be seen interacting with a baby gorilla through the glass of the exhibit.
And the little gorilla seems just as interested in the little girl as she is in him.
He walks along the edge of his exhibit, and the little girl follows him step for step.
When he realizes that she is following him, he puts a little hairy foot up onto the glass.
The little girl does the same and as her foot touches the glass, the gorilla jumps up and hits the glass with both of his hands in excitement.
The little girl laughs and tells her dad that she is going to do the same thing as the gorilla.
So as the little gorilla makes his way back across the glass, the little girl follows him.
He puts his hands against the glass and lets them slide as he walks.
The little girl does the same.
When he sees this, he throws his arms in the air and waves them back and forth.
The little girl does it too and everyone standing near the exhibit starts to laugh.
The gorilla even seems to be enjoying himself.
Now it’s the little girl’s turn to make some moves.
In her excitement, she starts to run back and forth across the glass.
The gorilla does the same and the two are locked in a fun dance.
This gets the girl laughing hysterically and the rest of the people near the exhibit start laughing as well.
Then the gorilla does something very surprising–he stops at the glass and puts his lips up to it.
He holds them there, looking at the little girl.
She knows exactly what to do.
She runs up to the glass and puts her lips against it as well.
The two exchange a kiss between the glass and the on-lookers let out a simultaneous “aww.”
The gorilla seems excited about his kiss with the girl and starts to slap the glass and run back and forth behind it.
The little girl laughs and lets out a big smile right up against the glass.
The gorilla sees this, stops moving around, and contorts his face into a smile as well.
The two stand there looking at each other through the glass, both smiling at their new friend.
Because gorillas are considered to be so intelligent, the interaction between him and the little girl isn’t too surprising.
According to World Wildlife, “Gorillas are gentle giants and display many human-like behaviors and emotions, such as laughter and sadness. In fact, gorillas share 98.3% of their genetic code with humans, making them our closest cousins after chimpanzees and bonobos.”
So the next time that you are at the zoo, see if you can make an emotional connection with a gorilla.
Ths little girl did, and it was adorable.
