Jimmy Carter’s 95 and remains one of the most influential humanitarian figures in the world.

He certainly doesn’t act like a politician these days, despite his decorated political career. He’s more of a… people person.

Just a refresher: he served one term as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981.

Jimmy firmly believes in the sanctity of law in international affairs and is especially supportive of the principle of self-determination for all.

His administration was involved in various important foreign affairs, including the Panama Canal, the Camp David Accords, improved relations with China, and the calamitous Iran hostage crisis.

His Presidency ran during the Cold War, a period of heightened geopolitical tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Carter administration proceeded to implement a policy of détente with the USSR, fostering trade and easing tensions between the two superpowers.

Jimmy Carter’s post-Presidential life has been lauded for its influential humanitarian work.

Jimmy and his wife Rosalynn have four children, including John William, James Earl III, Donnel Jeffrey, and Amy Lynn.

He recently took to social media with Rosalynn about the ongoing global pandemic and health crisis.

Yes, 95-year-old Jimmy Carter is on Twitter.

He and Rosalynn’s words have been making waves. Their message is simple and direct: “Please wear a mask to save lives”

In other words: wear a mask in public!

The couple has expressed support for social distancing practices, as well as the use of masks to mitigate viral transmission.

Jimmy Carter is one of four living former Presidents, and he’s done it by being smart and careful with his health. Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush are the other three.

It should come as no surprise that Jimmy Carter supports the use of masks, especially given his age and humanitarian work.

Wearing masks shouldn’t be a partisan issue. It’s just a simple health precaution.

During the month of March, Jimmy and Rosalynn asked supporters to give respects and resources to those working hard to help soften the impact of COVID-19, such as health workers.

His words hold a lot of weight, especially considering he’s the oldest President ever.

He founded the Carter Center in 1982 in Atlanta, Georgia. The organization’s heavily involved in humanitarian and social projects across the globe, including Ghana, Liberia, Egypt, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Nicaragua, among others.

Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work, joining Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and eventually Barack Obama.

One of Jimmy Carter’s greatest humanitarian accomplishments involves helping eliminate Guinea worm disease. There were 3.5 million cases in 1986, but only 54 cases as of 2019.

On June 3rd, he even gave his nuanced perspective on the social unrest in the United States following the death of George Floyd.

“As a white male of the South, I know all too well the impact of segregation and injustice to African Americans. As a politician, I felt a responsibility to bring equity to my state and our country. In my 1971 inaugural address as Georgia’s governor, I said: ‘The time for racial discrimination is over.’ With great sorrow and disappointment, I repeat those words today, nearly five decades later.'”

Jimmy seems to genuinely care about people and the state of humanity. He’s dedicated his last half-century to improving the human condition, globally.

The former President’s noticed America’s recent and ongoing struggles, feeling the need to offer his perspective. Again in the words of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter,

“Please wear a mask to save lives.”

What do you think of Jimmy and Rosalynn’s message? What steps are you taking to ensure the health of yourself and others?

You can certainly save lives by being preventative and sanitary. Plus, the more vigilant we are now, the sooner things will change for the better.

Stay healthy out there.
