The crowd went wild before 29-year-old Irish heartthrob Christopher King even sang a note on the reality singing competition Ireland’s Got Talent.

King already had a few fans after a viral Facebook video a few years ago, but the IGT stage is a much bigger one – one that he dominated with both his looks and talent.

With a cheeky English-Irish accent (he was born in Limerick but moved to England as a child), he told the judges that he decided it would be good luck to audition since two of them share names with his sisters.

“I’m taking as a good vibe..because my sisters are called Michelle and Denise,” he said as he flashed a handsome grin. “So that’s definitely got to be a sign for me to get at least two yeses from Michelle and Denise, yea!”

The show’s judges are comprised of veterans from two other reality talent competitions – Britain’s Got Talent and X-Factor: Louis Walsh, Michelle Visage, Jason Byrne, and Denise van Outen.

The show is hosted by Lucy Kennedy, who played an unlikely role in King’s success on the show.

Performing an 80s hit called “Don’t Close Your Eyes” by the late American country star Keith Whitley, King’s vocals had the crowd roaring.

Whatever he lacked in pitch he made up for in pure handsomeness.

IGT host Lucy Kennedy exclaimed “He’s perfect in every way!” before making a surprise move – she rushed over to press the show’s famed “Golden Buzzer” herself – much to the surprise of the judges.

In fact, she did so before the judges could even get their votes in.

It was a bold move for a host and one usually reserved for judges alone!

The Golden Buzzer moves a contestant on to the live semi-finals without any further auditioning and also rains down gold confetti to celebrate.

His moments of vocal imperfection were swept away in an instant and chalked up to “nerves.”

Kennedy explained later:

“I met him backstage and I really like him as a person. I love his voice and I know he’s nervous and I hear the nerves in his voice. But I know in my heart this boy will be in the final. I know it.”

Promising to work on his nerves before the semi-finals and not let Kennedy down, he thanked the audience as he choked up with emotion.

While King didn’t make it through the semi-finals, he now has a burgeoning music career after making it big both on social media and then on IGT.

He released his own cover of the single “Don’t Close Your Eyes” in 2018 and is now working on an album with his band.

According to his website:

“Christopher is currently recording more music and preparing for upcoming shows with his band later in the year.”

The winner of the first season of Ireland’s Got Talent was the 31-piece dance ensemble RDC who walked away with a €50,000 prize and their very own TV special on TV3 to be scheduled later in the year.
