High school athletes aren’t confined to limited options like basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball, and cheerleading. There are other sports that allow them to fully unlock their potential and sharpen their skills, like rhythmic gymnastics. Typically, this type of sport is associated with females. The common misconception that only females can excel in sports that involve gymnastics and dance-like choreography has long been shut down by males the world over, just like the winning gymnasts of Ibara High School.

Rhythmic gymnastics allows the use of apparatus like hoops or ribbons, but this all-male team decided to go freehand. Clad in black, sleeveless, form-fitting suits designed with artistic swirls of yellow and purple lines across the chest, the team of six stood in formation, ready to execute what would end up to be the competition’s winning routine.

With soft, slow music as their audio backdrop, the team walked onto the mat and waited for their cue. It was a visually satisfying routine: graceful, gradual transitions from step to step, outstretched legs and arms, pointed toes, and flawless backflips.

Incorporating cheerleading-inspired moves into their routine, the team also had a few lifting stunts to show off, unsurprisingly nailing each one. The seamless combination of ballet steps and gymnastics highlighted the flexibility and rhythmic movements of each member.

Not a single one of the gymnasts missed a step or lost count. Each kept in time with the other, resulting in an amazing performance that unquestionably deserved first place.

Committing to learning rhythmic gymnastics and perfecting a routine takes hours and hours of practice, immeasurable effort, and the ability to work well with a team. There’s no doubt the team’s coach, their families, and the school they represent are all filled with pride. First place or not, there is no denying talent when you see it. Let this all-male rhythmic gymnastics team be a solid reminder of how incredible it is to break stereotypes and unapologetically show what you’ve got.
