Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving! All of these holidays have one thing in common: they aim to let you make the most of your weekend. But Halloween? Well, it could be on Monday or Wednesday!
But there is good news ahead of us. A petition launched last year to move Halloween from Oct. 31 to the last Saturday of the month. This petition gained an audience just this month.
The petition was launched by the nonprofit Halloween & Costume Association. The company’s goal? To make Halloween a “safer, longer, stress-free celebration.”
But why Halloween? Is it really that popular or that important? According to young people, yes! In fact, “51% Of Millennials say Halloween is their favorite holiday, why cram it into 2 rushed evening weekday hours when it deserves a full day!?!”
Back in the day, Halloween was even creepier than it was now. At least in retrospect. The tale of the Jack-O-Lantern is not fun and games, but the fact that children danced and begged for food leaves a bad taste in your mouth. These days, we celebrate Halloween in a lighter manner. Letting kids be kids!
That’s exactly why the Association in question decides to broaden the holiday by giving us a solid weekend to work with. On July 31 (exactly three months before Halloween), the petition had over 125,000, with more people adding their every minute. The petition is hosted by Change.org, the leading platform for causes of any kind.
The Halloween & Costume Association does a wonderful job marketing to parents saying that, “63% of children don’t carry a flashlight while they are trick-or-treating. Grab a clip-on light if they don’t want to carry one! Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween.”
According to the HCA bylaws, they have four goals:
1. To promote the common business interests of those engaged in the Halloween industry.
2. To consider and deal by all lawful means with common problems of management, such as
those involved in the production, distribution, employment, and financial functions of the
Halloween industry; to foster cooperative action in advancing by all lawful means the common purposes of its members, and promote activities designed to enable the industry to be conducted with the greatest economy and efficiency.
3. To promote the safe celebration of Halloween
4. To conduct or engage in all lawful activities in furtherance of the foregoing purposes, or incidental thereto.
So how can a weekend help this? Well, with Mom and Dad at home, accidents are much less likely to take place. Plus, everyone gets to join in on the festivities, not just those who happen to get off work. According to the Association, as I’ve mentioned, they wish, “to promote and build the celebration of Halloween in the United States.”
