Every good barbecue needs a good grill master. And dads make the best grill masters. Dane Anderson of Spokane, Washington knows this that’s why he needed to find a dad to man the grill at his upcoming shindig.
So, he took to Craiglist to find his man and placed an ad.
Anderson and his college buddies mostly live away from their parents so none of their own fathers could fulfill the role.
“We just thought it would be a little better because we don’t really live with our fathers,” Anderson told KHQ.
The BBQ was to be held on the Saturday before Father’s Day.
“We’re just some average guys who love cracking cold ones on Saturdays, because, you know, Saturdays are for The Boys,” Anderson told Huffington Post.
Here’s what the ad said:
“To interested individuals,
We will be throwing a backyard BBQ on June 17th to celebrate beer and each other. We range in age from 21-26, and while most of us know how to operate a grill, none of us are prepared to fill the role of “BBQ Dad.” That being said, we are in need of a generic father figure from 4 p.m. to about 8 p.m. (though you may stay the full duration of the party). Duties include:
- Grilling hamburgers and hot dogs (whilst drinking beer)
- Bringing your own grill (though this is subject to change. We will provide all of the meat)
- Refer to all attendees as “Big Guy’, “Chief”, “Sport”, “Champ” etc. (whilst drinking beer)
- Talk about dad things, like lawnmowers, building your own deck, Jimmy Buffet, etc. Funny anecdotes are highly encouraged. All whilst drinking beer.
Desired experience
- A minimum of 18 years experience as a father
- A minimum of 10 years grilling experience
- An appreciation of a nice, cold beer on a hot summer day
We can’t pay you in money, BUT we can give you all the food and cold beer your heart desires. Grill for a few hours, then sit back and crack open a few cold ones with the boys.

Their ad ended up going viral after a local news outlet picked up the story. That’s when they started getting responses.
They had a few dads to consider.
“His name is Jerry but he said we can call him Dave or Bill,” Dane said. “There was one guy Stan who sent us a message but then he stopped replying.”
“If you’re reading this Stan, The Boys are very bitter but we will accept 100 cold ones from a local Spokane brewery as penance.”
Eventually their internet fame went to their heads
“With all the publicity, we’ve decided to ‘Go Bill or Go Home.’ Bill Murray that is,” Anderson said. “We are dead-set on getting Bill to be our father figure #BillOrBust.”
They didn’t end up with Murray, but they did have several dads and sponsors for their party.
“As the event grew in popularity, the Boys were contacted by companies that wanted to sponsor the event! Johnsonville supplied a cooler full of brats, Chester Copperpot Clothing donated a bunch of custom t-shirts, and right at the last moment, Rainier hooked the Boys up with 500 cold ones!” a post on Imgur explained.
“Lets meet the Dads! This is Jim, AKA Grill Dad. He brought his own badass smoker/grill and fired it up, churning out delicious burgers and brats all night,” the post explained. “Saturdays are for the Boys (Apperently “Boys” is a gender neutral term. Girls can be Boys, as long as they are with the Boys and also cracking cold ones).”
“This is Scott, AKA Weed Dad. Scott works at a dispensary and was hooking everybody up with infused goodies (we’re in Washington, it’s legal yo). Scott was also dishing out veggie burgers and A+ fatherly advice the whole time. Scott recently lost his own dad, everything on the table are pictures of him and his dad or other mementos of his father.”
“This is Pete, AKA Army Dad. In this picture Pete is singing us an Italian drinking song he learned from one of his Army buddies. Pete brought a pony keg of homebrew to share and some wild stories from his glory days,” the post continued.
All in all it was a good day filled with a lot of cold ones.
