There are a lot of emotions floating around anytime a contestant walks onto the stage of America’s Got Talent. After all, they only have one chance at the huge opportunity that could change their lives.
But there are some auditions that tug on your heartstrings more than others. Just like when the world was introduced to 18-year-old Jaycob Curlee from Daphne, Alabama.
Jaycob was shaking like a leaf before his audition. His nerves weren’t going to hold him back though.
Carrying an acoustic guitar, the teen took his place in front of the judges. They could sense his nervousness – but let’s face it, a lot of people are anxious knowing they’re about to perform in front of a massive crowd.
He explained how his mom was his “number one fan,” and how his dream would be to win. From that moment you could tell Jaycob had a lot of heart and soul.
But did the teen really have what it takes to blow the judges away?
Jaycob began strumming his guitar and when his voice finally emerged – chills spread across the room.
With a soulful voice, he sang “Waiting on the World to Change,” by John Mayer. The crowd immediately took to the teen, clapping along to his performance.
Whoa…he was really good.
There was a point in Jaycob’s act that you could really tell had an effect on everyone. Not only did he have an incredibly soothing voice, but combined with the powerful lyrics made it that much more intense.
“Now if we had the power, to bring our neighbors home from war. They would have never missed a Christmas, no more ribbons on their door.”
The audience loved Jaycob so much that they gave him a standing ovation. When he looked out into the room and saw their response, it was too much for the teen.
It was such an emotional moment that Jaycob’s eyes filled with tears.
Suddenly, Judge Mel B got up from her chair and quickly headed for the stage. She was thinking what a lot of us probably were – this boy needed a big hug!
She wrapped her arms around Jaycob as everyone cheered. Not only that, she even wiped his tears away too.
So, what did the judges think of Jaycob’s musical performance?
Heidi expressed how much she liked his “beautiful voice,” saying she was now one of his fans. Howard admitted that he would be comfortable investing his money in the teen’s career, which to him, is a sign of true talent.
Mel B compared Jaycob’s voice to that of Ed Sheeran. She hit the nail on the head.
Yet, even more emotions flooded in after Howie Mandel said,
“You sang with so much soul, like you’ve lived a life longer than your years.”
Little did anyone know, Jaycob actually had a tough story to tell.
He responded, “Life hasn’t always been easy, my childhood was pretty rough.”
Jaycob explained to everyone how he and his sister had been in foster homes since he was five-years-old. The hardest part was not having a consistent home, or knowing if he was loved.
With more tears in his eyes, Jaycob went on to say how they were eventually adopted by his parents. The strong feelings he experienced knowing he was finally loved was overwhelming – and he compared it to that moment on stage.
Howie responded beautifully,
“America’s Got Talent has now adopted you, and America loves you too.”
From beginning to end, Jaycob’s audition is a rollercoaster of emotions that will leave your heart in a puddle. What an inspiration he is!
