The Way Back Home

It’s a special kind of commitment men and women of the armed forces endure. It’s putting their entire lives on the line to guarantee our protection and enjoy our civil liberties. Their work is excruciating in every sense of the word. From going through intense boot camps to being mentally sharp to execute fight-flight responses, these men and women deserve as much praise and recognition as possible. It’s no wonder that the idea of returning home can be the sweetest treat to ever crave. The feeling is truly like no other. After being deployed for 11 months, the West Virginia National Guard got just that as they shared a special moment they won’t soon forget.

The troopers are seen sitting down next to one another on a flight back home. They were extremely elated to get to finally come back to the people who mean most in their lives. It’s a rekindling of bonds with friends and family and experiencing another world that is not wrought with battle. The immense sigh of relief of knowing you’ll be returning to your roots truly makes the moment seem surreal for these brave troopers. Such emotion can only be bottled until it inevitably opens up. And that’s when things got interesting: The group began singing to John Denver’s, “Take Me Home, Country Roads”. Better make sure you grab a tissue for what’s to come next!

A Bonding Experience

In a split second, the return flight to West Virginia became the sight of a heartwarming performance made possible by the troopers. The video was posted by Chandler Mcdaniel to social media. He was able `several different areas across the Middle East including Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and even Afghanistan. For them, this was the light at the end of the tunnel. This was the big satisfaction in knowing all the hard work really does pay off. They were strangers when first boarding, but after the singing performance that graced the skies, they have beautifully bonded over the experience.

In the video, we can see some of the troopers swaying their heads to and fro in sync with the song. Spending almost a year away from your home is certainly taxing on the body and mind, so it was delightful to see some loose movement from the troopers. Their voices reaching the ceiling as they showed they were not afraid to let their spirits fly high. The smooth guitar strings cascading throughout the heartfelt song really embodies the spirit of being free. It seemed to all mesh perfectly. It goes to show how deeply happy they are that they won’t be waking up with the threat of danger constantly looming over their heads for some time.
