Every child dreams of getting a puppy – these bundles of joy are and unless source of fun and a constant supply of love. When disaster struck in Detroit, some children got to have these dreams come true. A flash flood left puppies without a home, and you’ll never guess where they ended up.
A series of storms left the Michigan city in bad shape, and the people weren’t the only ones to suffer. One dog and her 11 puppies were out of luck when they found themselves stuck out in the middle of a flash flood.
The quick-thinking mother, Raina, dug a giant hole to keep her puppies safe. With all the fur balls bundled inside, they waited out the storm. The dogs had sought shelter in the backyard of a residential home. Luckily, one neighbor heard their cries.
When he heard whimpering, he called the Michigan Humane Society for help. This group is the self-described “largest and oldest animal welfare organization in the state, caring for tens of thousands of animals each year.” The society offers pet adoption, veteran services, cruelty investigation, emergency rescue, and much more. They are devoted to helping the outcast animals of Michigan in every way they can.
Soon, MHS responders were on the scene. They immediately recognized the problem and began thinking of ways to help the mother dog. Little Things stated that “by the time MHS arrived, Raina and her babies were hiding deep down in the muddy hole. It took the team hours to lure Raina out and assure her that she and her puppies were safe.”
Finally, the dogs were rescued. The team brought them back to the shelter, where the pups received the necessary vaccinations and medical care. With the puppies safe and sound, MHS focused on a new quest: finding them each loving homes.
They reached out to the community for loving families to take in these fuzzy friends. Couples, children, and animal lovers of all kinds filled the waiting room. Each group committed to adopting a puppy before they entered, and now was their chance to pick out their pup! The adopters waited anxiously for their turns.
To make everything fair, the people caring for the puppies gave out random numbers: these numbers gave the order in which families could pick their puppies. Everyone was excited to meet the newest addition to the family.
These lucky people were thrilled to find their perfect matches. Every last puppy found a home!
