When it comes to music, people use all types of different instruments. Some, like the piano and violin, have a more lyrical sound while trumpets and trombones are robust and bold. Then there are the drums. Whether used for jazz, rock and roll, hip hop, heavy metal, or some other genre, the drums are a key component of creating magic.

Historians estimate the drums have been around since 6000 BC. This comes from archeologists discovering small cylinder discs along with wall markings in Peruvian caves. In modern-day, we’ve had the opportunity to witness some of the most talented drummers ever.

In A Gadda Da Vita inspired drummers everywhere.

In the 1970s, Iron Butterfly released a song entitled In A Gadda Da Vida. At first, you hear music that sounds both mystical and haunting. But it’s the 17-minute drum solo played by Ron Bushy that prompts an emotion. Today, even the younger generation finds inspiration from this and other performances.

Even everyday items make excellent drums.

Whether because they can’t afford an actual drum set, they’re looking for unique sounds, or that they want to try something new, people use all sorts of unique objects to drum. Two of the most popular are plastic buckets and the floor. But one group of high schoolers proved you can play the drums with an item found in every home, office, and school…the chair.

During a school performance, boys wowed the crowd with amazing drumming skills.

In a video that’s since gone viral, you first see nine guys sitting in chairs placed in the middle of the basketball court. Then without any music, they begin to tap their drum sticks in a distinct rhythm. At first, the sound’s relatively slow and overly controlled. But soon, that changes.

As the tempo and intensity increases, so does the audience’s response.

Adding to the tapping of the drum sticks, the students begin to stomp their feet on the floor. Then a few of them start using the seat of the chair to create a new dimension of sound. Now things get wild. Some of the members of the group stand up and walk around to the backside of the chairs while others remain seated.

The backrest of the chair now becomes another component of their “drums.”

They continue to tap their drum sticks together and stomp their feet while speeding up the tempo. But they still don’t miss a beat. At that point, the students are using every part of their chairs, including the legs, the seat, and the backrest. What they do is nothing less than spectacular.

Pretty soon, they’re all standing to deliver a more complex performance.

Standing behind the chairs, the students cross over their drum sticks with each other. In perfect synchronization, they turn the chairs around, this time using only the seat to tap fast and furious. While they only play for 1 minute and 34 seconds, the video’s well worth watching.

At the conclusion, the crowd jumps to its feet, cheering wildly. These boys deserved recognition. What a creative bunch of guys. It’s obvious they have real talent. You can also tell they’re having a blast with their innovative drumming style.
