The 2006 film The Holiday is a romantic comedy that is set in both England and the U.S., as the movies main characters swap homes for the Christmas holiday. Viewers quickly fell in love with the quaint English home — dubbed Rosehill Cottage — featured in the film.

To the delight of many fans of the movie, the home that inspired this little romantic getaway is up for sale, though many might not be able to afford the £650,000 ($821,744) price tag.

Located in Surrey, England, the home is found in the village of Holmsbury St. Mary. With the cute name Honeysuckle Cottage, the house served as inspiration for the set designs for Rosehill Cottage where a good part of the movie The Holiday took place.

Unlike its film counterpart, Honeysuckle Cottage is actually more spacious, featuring three bedrooms and a spacious living area.

Rightmove, which has a listing for the house, describes the cottage as follows:

A stunning extended period cottage with ironstone galleting and brick quoins under a tiled roof complemented by leaded light windows.

The property retains many character features, including an inglenook fireplace with Jotul log burner and exposed timbers.

Features of particular note include the bespoke craftsmen-built hand-painted kitchen with oil fired AGA, underfloor heating to the ground floor, and an extensive use of oak joinery throughout.

The property enjoys delightful landscaped gardens, which incorporates an extensive area of flagstone laid terrace with lovely views.

In addition to the three bedrooms and spacious living area, the house also has a small bathroom, complete with a small tub just like in the movie. Hopefully, whoever buys the house won’t be as uncomfortable using it as the movie’s lead character.

The kitchen of the cottage that inspired the film has the same exposed timbers overhead. This feature extends throughout the whole house, giving the home a rustic, though still, appealing and homey look. Likewise, the had-painted cabinets of the original cottage inspired those in the film.

The bedroom features the same exposed brick and small fireplace as the same room in the film. Over the fireplace is beautiful oak joinery, adding even more to the home’s unique English cottage charm.

About the Movie

Released in 2006, the movie stars Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black. Amanda, played by Diaz swaps homes with Iris, played by Kate Winslet. Amanda moves to Iris’ small but charming English cottage, while Iris moves into Amanda’s luxury home in Los Angeles, California.

At first, Amanda is unsure about her decision to swap homes, as the cottage is smaller than she realized, and life in the quaint English town where the home is located is nowhere near as exciting as that in L.A. Things turn around for her when she meets Iris’ brother, Graham, played by Jude Law.

Iris, now in L.A., revels in the luxury of Amanda’s home. Iris also meets movie composer Miles, played by Jack Black. As the movie progresses, a relationship develops between the two. It is a really charming movie with the sets inspired by Honeysuckle Cottage adding a lot to English charm of the film.

Speaking of set photos, this one is of Cameron Diaz trying to soak in the small bathtub found in the cottage. At the start of the film, her character thought it was a sink. But, it looks like her character, Amanda, made the best of it. In fact, this scene, and the rest of the following set photos, were shot in the studio.

Here is the kitchen from the film. Notice the charming little fireplace, painted cabinets, and small kitchen table. You can also see some of the exposed beams overhead, all features found at Honeysuckle Cottage, the inspiration for the movie’s Rosehill Cottage.

And here is a photo of the living room area from the cottage in the film. The exposed beams go along well with the stone fireplace, and the large, plush ottoman in the center also serves as a coffee table. The whole set exudes an English vibe, which made the whole film that much more charming.
