Everyone knows judge Simon Cowell can be at times a bit hard to please, to put it nicely. Usually, it’s quite funny to watch him. You never know what might come out of the renegade judge’s mouth next. However, sometimes he definitely takes things a bit too far. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened on the X Factor UK.
Simon actually told contestant Samantha Lavery that he wanted her to remove her makeup on national television.
We can only imagine how self-conscious that must have made her feel.
“Samantha, I kind of wish we’d met without your kind of what you think is your pop star image,” Simon began.
The expression on Samantha’s face instantly changed from happy and merry to totally confused.
“I think with you, I think we’ve had a bit of a mask put up, I’d almost like to see you without so much makeup,” Simon told her.
Everyone watching the show’s jaws dropped. We had to do a double take. No one could believe he said that!
“All I’m saying, Sam, is I want to peel away the mask. Does that sound bad?” Simon asked.
The other two female judges both raised their eyebrows at him in a questioning manner, then scolded him for his brashness.
“Yeah, that is bad. She is allowed to experiment and I think that is what girls do,” the female judges said,
As for Samantha’s reaction, she held it together like a true champ.
While a remark such as that could easily cause the best of us to break down in tears, Samantha instead kept calm and responded like the strong woman she is.
“I get like the whole image and thing like yeah, but I don’t know,” Samantha said.
She refused to play into Simon’s frame and simply just turned her back on him and walked away.
Later that night, when Samantha returned to sing for the judges, Simon gave a partial apology.
Not that it matters, but we should also add that this time, she did have her makeup done differently.
“I didn’t say that to be mean by the way. I actually said it because I hadn’t quite connected with you,” Simon explained.
As soon as she started singing though, it instantly shut him up.
The song Samantha chose to perform was “Make It Rain” by Ed Sheeran.
Her voice is absolutely incredible, and as viewers, it brought chills down our spines.
In the end, the performance completely won Simon over.
We don’t think he will ever be making any rude comments to Samantha ever again.
“I just wanted to show you who I actually am,” Samantha said.
She didn’t need to explain herself though.
From the start, the Samantha we saw was not only beautiful but a fantastic singer as well. Makeup or no makeup, it never mattered to us, the viewers. In a singing talent show, contestants should be judged on what really matters, their voice.
Samantha gave them a performance they will always remember.
She deserves so many good things in the future and we are certain she has a long and amazing career ahead of her.
Also, Samantha, thanks for not taking any of Simon’s mean comments to heart!
