The ongoing impeachment proceedings of President Donald Trump have tensions running high. Americans are on edge everywhere. But nowhere is it as tense as Washington D.C.
But one congresswoman wasn’t about to let the mood damage her Halloween spirit. Now, she’s drawing fire for her decision to wear a Batgirl costume to the Congressional impeachment vote.
Rep. Katie Porter of California arrived in full costume, complete with a cape and mask.
She even gave the cameras a smile as she took her place beside her colleagues. She was the only one in costume.
Reactions were mixed after the monumental vote. They were split along partisan lines. Many Republicans said Porter was showing disrespect for the United States Congress.
“Democratic Rep. Katie Porter is making a mockery of the House of Reps,” said Steve Guest, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee, in a tweet.
Many Democrats, meanwhile, said the costume pointed to Portman’s sense of humor. The congressional vote did take place on Halloween, after all.
Porter isn’t backing down from her actions. She defended herself on Twitter. She said she dressed up because her role in the world isn’t just as a politician, but also as a mother.
She also said the silly costume had nothing to do with how seriously she takes her job.
“Taking my work in Congress seriously doesn’t mean I take *myself* too seriously,” said Porter. “To my kids, Luke, Paul, and Betsy, I’m still just Mom—seeing the Bat Signal on Halloween & putting on a goofy costume come with the territory.” [sic]
The costume was dissected on social media platforms such as Twitter. as well as talk shows like “The View.”
“If you want to be taken seriously as Democrats, why are you going to show up in that?” said “View” co-host Abby Huntsman.
Porter wore her costume to vote on a bill on the extension of the Terrorism Risk Insurance Program. Then she changed back into professional clothing. For the rest of the day, she was dressed like her colleagues. But it still sparked outrage.
Porter is a member of the House Financial Services Committee.
People also came to her defense on social media and elsewhere. They said it was a good thing for her to show off her sense of humor.
“Of course, Republicans, who love their criminal president, got triggered by a Democrat dressing up as someone who beats criminals to a pulp,” tweeted filmmaker Adam Best. “Katie Porter represents the people of California better than that Hack Reagan ever did.”
Best wasn’t the only one using the situation to fire shots at President Trump.
It wasn’t a good day for the president, who lost a battle against the proceeding of impeachment hearings. For those who support impeachment, Porter’s costume was oddly fitting.
But there’s a good chance everyone’s reading far too much into it. For Porter, it was a way of being herself on a fun holiday while also representing the American people.
