Imagine getting your hair cut and styled by none other than Chris Appleton. If you don’t know who he is, think back to a time when you saw a photo of a celebrity and thought that their hair looked amazing. There’s a good chance that Chris Appleton did that.
Appleton is a stylist to celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, and Jennifer Lopez.
But this time, he was styling someone else’s hair — someone who hadn’t had a hair cut in a long time.
Laura was a recent college graduate who was invited to appear on the Rachael Ray Show. Her long, rippling brown hair went past her waist. In fact, she told Ray and Appleton, she had been growing it out for about 10 years. But now it was time for a change — for one very specific reason.
“I just graduated from college, and I need a new look for the career,” said Laura.
Short hair has a way of aging a person in a positive way, making them look more mature. So, it was a good choice for Laura. And she had the chance of a lifetime to get her hair cut by the man who makes some of the most famous women in the world look their best.
The best part was Step #1.
With several feet of hair to cut off, Appleton’s first act was to just chop it all off in one fell swoop. But first, he double-checked with Laura to make sure she was ready.
“Go big or go home,” she said.
So, Appleton went big.
In mere seconds, he had Laura’s long, wavy hair in his hands, which he quickly traded off to Ray. Though Laura seemed like she was still feeling great, Ray seemed like she was in shock at how much he had just cut off.
“I thought Chris was going underneath the rubber band,” she joked. “We’re going to play Double Dutch with her hair.”
After the first initial cut, Appleton brought Laura back for a more elaborate cut with some layering and styling.
Laura didn’t get to see her own reflection while things were underway. It was only when she came back out onstage — after less than an hour — that she got the chance to find out what she looked like.
When she finally did, she could barely believe her eyes. She even started to tear up a little bit, prompting Ray to make sure she was actually happy and not upset.
“Dude, just the haircut’s gonna get you the gig,” said Ray, adding that she looked “sassy”.
Appleton gave her a sleek cut that still had a lot of bounce and movement.
It was so versatile and he demonstrated the different ways that she could wear it.
The perfect part? When Ray asked Laura what she had just gotten her degree in, she replied that she had majored in fashion. Now, she has a killer hairstyle to take charge in a challenging and competitive industry.
