Spring is in full swing this year and so are the critters and dust that keep infiltrating every corner of the house!
We all know what this means; It’s time to start your Spring cleaning.
One area that often gets overlooked during this messy event is your baseboards. Think about it.
All the dust that swirls in on those spring breezes falls ever so consistently onto the floor, into unreachable corners, and of course on your baseboards.
Before you know it, you have an insurmountable layer of dust and dew to scrub. Save yourself the heartache this year by using these awesome cleaning tips from The Country Chic Cottage.
Trust us, you’ll be SO glad you did!
First, gather your supplies
- Scrub brush
- Hand broom and dustpan
- Magic Eraser (a sponge works too but let’s face it, nothing beats the Magic!)
- Spray bottle filled with water (you can find good spray bottles at the Dollar Store)
- A handful of cotton swabs
- A few dryer streets
One of the best things about this cleaning hack is that it doesn’t require any expensive, chemical-laden cleaners.
Now that you have everything together, it’s time to roll up the sleeves and get to work!
Start by dry-brushing the baseboards in order to make this exasperating chore move more quickly.
This will remove any loose dust from the surface. Use the hand broom to sweep the dust into the dustpan and away from your cleaning surface, to keep you from having to go back over your work as the dust resettles.
After you’ve thoroughly brushed your entire surface, grab the water bottle.
In order to make cleaning the more resilient dust and grime easier, make sure to moisten the surface with water.
Lightly mist the cleaning surface with your spray bottle one area at a time.
Doing this will save you elbow grease in the long run by lifting the remaining dirt away from the baseboards, making the next step almost too easy.
Ready for the magic?
To get down to the nitty-gritty, grab your magic eraser and gently rub away all the mess.
The magic eraser gives you double-action cleaning power. As you scrub, it miraculously “erases” any markings or caked on dirt that doesn’t come up with the water.
Once your sponge or eraser is thoroughly dirty, simply rinse and repeat.
This also works on crayons (because baseboards are right at toddler level), unnamed gunk, and just about any other form of filth you can think of.
Now for the touchup!
As your moving along your baseboards, don’t worry about those frustratingly small areas along edges and corners.
To clean the out-of-reach areas, simply dip a cotton swab in water and scrub away.
The long thin handle allows you to reach the tiny areas where dust really likes to build up. You never have to bang and bruise your knuckles again trying to get that last bit of dirt!
Can I get a hallelujah?!
Now that your baseboards are looking fresh, the next step will ensure they stay that way.
Using a dryer sheet, thoroughly rub all along your baseboards, rubbing in circular motions to get maximum coverage.
The dryer sheet leaves an invisible film that will prevent dust from sticking to your baseboards, keeping them looking impeccable.
