Iconic Cheddar from 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Has Passed Away

July 22nd, 2019

The Corgi who plays Cheddar on the popular TV show “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has passed away. Unfortunately, the senior dog’s death was imminent as he had to be put to sleep by his owner. But have no fear Cheddar lovers, Stewart’s look-alike sister, Stella, has taken over his role.

An Idyllic Last Day

According to Stewart’s owner, he had a great last day playing at the beach, including a frolic in the surf, and eating takeout from his favorite restaurant, In & Out Burger. The veterinarian met Stewart and his owner at the beach and put him to sleep peacefully while he listened to the ocean. A Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Stewart was 13-years-old when he was put to sleep.

In a sad post on Instagram, Stewart’s owner relayed the popular pup’s last day, “We went to the beach (his favorite place) where he frolicked in the surf and then enjoyed a picnic lunch of In & Out burgers. We relaxed in the sun and just enjoyed each other’s company. Our veterinarian met us there later and Stewart went to sleep peacefully in my arms while listening to the sounds of the ocean. He was a one in a million kind of dog, he was my supaah staah.”

On the TV show Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Cheddar had a relatively important role, playing the faithful dog companion of Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher), his onscreen owner. He’d even featured in a few episodes, having played an important part in one of the show’s beloved Halloween heist episodes.

Owned by Raymond Holt and Kevin Kozner (Marc Evan Jackson) on the show in his role as Cheddar, he was a well-trained dog who could do a wide variety of tricks. Cheddar was also apparently a lover of wedding cake. Known as Captain Holt’s secret weapon, Cheddar came to the cast’s rescue on numerous occasions.

Notable Scenes that included Cheddar were when he sneaked through ducts to steal plaques or when he served as ring bearer at the wedding of Jake (Andy Samberg) and Amy (Melissa Fumero). It was during this episode that his love of wedding cake was revealed.

Stewart as Cheddar

Stewart first took up the role of Cheddar in the show’s fourth season. And even though Stewart the Corgi has played the role of Cheddar the longest, the role has been played by other Corgis. Stewart’s sister Stella has taken on the role since his death. The dog that played Cheddar was also known for his sense of humor, often repeating mistakes because he knew it would get a laugh out of the cast and crew.

Stewart was full of personality! To honor his memory, I am going to share various “Fun Facts” about Stewart and his adventures. Stewart Fun Fact Number 1 This was from an article in usmagazine.com: Co-creator and executive producer Dan Goor, for his part, gushed about Stewart’s ability to improve morale each time he came to work. “In the episode where Gina [Chelsea Peretti] and Terry [Terry Crews] try to boost Captain Holt’s social media presence by making Instagram pictures of Cheddar, there is a scene where Holt gives a moving speech filled with gravitas about honor and duty,” he recalled. “Every time he began that monologue, Cheddar, who was just off screen, would let out a soft, unending howl, which cracked up everyone on set. Every time.” ———————————————————————This sound that Stewart was making was actually his impersonation of Tim the Tool Man. Not all dogs are able to mimic a human, but Stewart could. Back when the TV show Home Improvement was popular, I trained Stewart to make that trademark sound. #animalactors #pembrokewelshcorgi #corgisofinstagram #timthetoolman #funnycorgi #cheddarbrooklynninenine #brooklynninenine #venturacountydogtraining @thetrainedcanine

Stewart’s Legacy

Obviously, Stewart left his mark on the role of Cheddar and will be missed deeply by the cast and crew of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” I am sure that his sister Stella will perform admirably in the role and only time will tell if she is as popular as Stewart when playing Cheddar.
