For an aspiring singer, there is nothing more exciting than singing alongside their musical inspiration―their idol. It is a moment that a lot of singers dream of. Young Charice Pempengco from the Philippines is one of the lucky few who had the opportunity to sing with her music hero, none other than the international diva Celine Dion. That moment was a really spectacular event that Charice will never forget all her life.
This budding young talent was about to get the surprise of her life.
When Charice was just 16-years-old, she met Oprah Winfrey and sang for her on the set of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Upon hearing her sing, the renowned Hollywood host and celebrity was absolutely amazed by this girl’s outstanding talent. After the show, she called her good friend and famous composer and producer, David Foster, to know if there’s something he can do for the young talent.
In another episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Charice was once again invited by the renowned host where she performed her rendition of Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” while David Foster was playing the piano. Little did she know that a surprise was waiting for her after she sang.
Celine Dion herself talked to her via live satellite to promise her about a duet where Charice and Celine will be performing in the former’s concert in September. The young singing sensation was completely excited with this promise. I mean, Celine Dion wants to sing with you? That’s awesome!
She was dubbed as “The Most Talented Girl In The World”.
On September 15 of that same year, the promised duet finally came to life and Charice could not contain her excitement any longer! The girl who was dubbed by Oprah as “The Most Talented Girl In The World” was definitely excited and could not believe that it was actually happening to her. What a surreal moment for this young star!
When it was finally time to sing, Celine Dion called her to the stage after introducing her.
“This young girl’s name is Charice. I’m so excited. She’s 16-years-old and she’s from the Philippines. Let me tell you she has a voice that can literally blow the roof off Madison Square.”
The diva also shared about the real story of how Charice and her mom escaped a terrifying experience with a violent father. Celine also commended how through prayers and dreams and her God-given talent in singing, Charice entered and won every singing contest in her native country and eventually got noticed.
“I had a chance to see Charice perform one of my songs in Oprah last week. I have a little difficulty to talk right now because I met Charice and I’m so emotional and so I’m searching and looking for my words trying to control my emotion. I invited her to come here tonight to sing with me.”
Dedicating the song “Because You Loved Me” to her mom, Racquel, Charice sang her heart out alongside her idol and hero, Celine Dion. It was such a spectacular night at The Madison Square Garden. Celine Dion and Charice sang impeccably in front of the 18,000 people who was watching. Their voices were so beautiful together and everyone was obviously having the time of their lives.
Despite her young age, Charice proved that she was truly worthy of a chance to sing with “the” Celine Dion. Her talent is totally remarkable and Celine Dion surely did make her shine even more. Charice’s emotions as she sings for her mom was on point, reaching the hearts of everyone who was watching and listening.
Charice’s dream has definitely become a reality. Such a moment is something that nobody would ever forget all their lives. She may have gone through a lot of hardships but because of her strength, love for family and an amazing voice, Charice did not just get the chance to be with her musical heroes, she also gained opportunities to give herself and her mom a better chance at life.
