A day in the life of a cab driver is usually anything but normal. They never know who is going to step inside their car. And for this cab driver, his night was anything but normal.
Cab driver, Joseph Kyallo Wambua, was going about his normal route.
Joseph Kyallo Wumbua is a 35-year-old cab driver from Nairobi, Kenya. With a population of around 3 million and growing, Nairobi is an extremely densely-populated area. Joseph Kyallo Wumbua’s normal route takes him around the Fedha Estate area in Embakasi, which is on the southeast corner of the city.
Being a newer driver, he was still finding his way around the city, working the night shift. Joseph Kyallo Wumbua notes that he remembers passing by an area that drew a large crowd, but his route kept him going. Later on, he got a request for a ride coming from the same area. The crowd was still there.
A woman was having seizures.
Another person nearby, Philip Ogola, had ordered the cab as he had spent most of his evening there on the side of the road with a woman. The woman, however, was very ill. Philip Ologa had been riding his bicycle when he too noticed the large crowd and came in for a closer look.
The crowd had gathered around a woman having an epileptic seizure. Philip jumped into action and helped provide first aid via the on-phone instructions from Dr. Thuranira Kaugiria. After the woman regained consciousness, she told Philip Ologa that she had been selling clothes in a nearby area, after walking eight miles away from her home, and had gone the whole day without eating anything.
The compassionate people around helped provide the money for her car and some food for the children she had at home.
His quick thinking saved her life.
As Joseph Kyallo Wambua pulled up, they filled him in on the story. He was hesitant to transport the woman now learning of her struggle, worrying that she would have another seizure.
“I was really worried about the possibility of the woman suffering another seizure, but those who had attended to her assured me that she was good to go. So I accepted the trip and we left,” said Kyallo.
However, while Joseph and the woman were talking, she slumped forward in her seat and Joseph immediately pulled the car over. Joseph called back Philip asking for help and he walked him through the first aid steps on the phone. After a while, the woman regained consciousness again. Joseph drove her instead to the Kitengela Medical Centre where the staff knew of her condition and were able to provide her with the care she needed.
The whole time, the cab fare had been running, but Joseph switched if off.
“I canceled the trip because I felt it wasn’t important at that time. I chose to switch off the app until I was completely done with her,” Joseph explained.
Joseph was later able to visit the woman in the hospital where he learned that her husband had left her when he found out she was having seizures. Thanks to Philip and Joseph’s quick thinking and kindness, this woman was able to get the care she needed.
So thankful that there are people who are willing to lend a helping hand all over the world.
