Student hopes to end plastic waste, designs bioplastic made of fish skin and algae
"It makes no sense to me that we are using plastic, an incredibly durable material, for products that have a life-cycle of less than a day.”

More than ever before, our planet is in need of a serious cleanup and one-time-use plastics seem to be the culprit. Since it was invented in 1907, plastic has been at the forefront of one of the biggest environmental changes the world has ever seen. Global warming is ever-present and that is why change is so important in today’s world.

Within this last decade, clean up efforts have made a significant impact on our earth’s sustainability but, what if we could start at the root of the problem?

Lucy Hughes a 23-year-old University Of Sussex student, has made a recent discovery that could change the way we look at waste. Her product is called Marinatex and it might just save the world, one fish at a time.

Marinatex is what’s known as a bioplastic. Stronger than most film plastics, non-toxic and is 100% biodegradable. It is made from waste material from the sustainable fishing industry and red algae and does not release anything into the earth that shouldn’t be there. So, much more planet-friendly than its plastic alternative and will not contribute to further pollution of our earth and waterways.

Lucy says “It makes no sense to me that we are using plastic, an incredibly durable material, for products that have a life-cycle of less than a day.”

That is why she came up with this innovative idea but it certainly wasn’t overnight. She said it was a personal challenge to find the right consistency in order to be a durable alternative to man-made plastics but her perseverance has certainly paid off.

In her fourth year of studies, she thinks she may be onto something and, so much in fact that, she is hopeful that her product could make its way to store near you by 2020!

Imagine it, opening a wrapped deli sandwich and the plastic film is actually made of 100% biodegradable material.

For now, we remain hopeful that this idea and many more earth-saving ones become a reality. What the world needs now is love, less single-use plastic and more Lucys.
