This animal shelter pays the employee’s on the third shift to sleep, and they absolutely love it!
Who wouldn’t want to be able to sleep on the job? A new law in Illinois is making that possible for the employee’s in a Knox County animal shelter to do just that.
Unfortunately, there was a fire in Chicago that left 30 dogs deceased. That tragedy was the force behind making the new law that doesn’t allow shelters to leave animals overnight without someone watching out for them. Now, this shelter in Knox County has a shift where the employee just comes to sleep with the dogs!
The dogs know it’s time to lay down when the 3rd shift starts, and the employee’s build a bond with the pups just by sleeping with them.
This is the best job ever for animal lovers! The third shift employee’s come ready to sleep, and the dogs know exactly what time it is. They still build bonds with the dogs, only, they do it through napping together!
Lucas Barton and Joshua Miller are employee’s at the Galesburg shelter, they both leave their beds at home empty, in order to come be a watchful eye for the defenseless animals in the shelter.
“Sometimes they even roll over and shake your hand or play with you.” Said, Miller. “When they come in the rooms, they know it’s time to lay down.”
The shelter considered alarm systems, and sprinkler’s, but settled on an employee sleeping overnight.
The shelter wasn’t quite sure what they were going to do in order to stay in compliance with the new law. They thought about getting an alarm system that alerted authorities in case of an emergency, a sprinkler system also crossed their mind. In the end, they realized that wouldn’t really help the pets much if a fire actually broke out.
“We thought really that none of those would truly help the pets, well a little bit, but by the time the fireman got here, maybe they wouldn’t know where to let the animals out.” Said, Shelter Director, Erin Buckmaster.
In the end, the little bit extra it costs to keep someone overnight has been well worth it, and the animals are so happy!
The employees at the shelter help the animals get ready for adoption by teaching them social skills. Both animals and employees love the new sleep time! Joshua Miller said:
“It’s pretty awesome, honestly, I’d do it without the money.”
This is both awesome, and heartwarming! These employees are forming great bonds with these animals and help make sure nothing bad happens to them. Plus, you can’t beat sleeping on the job!
