When a young family shows up on your doorstep and asks to use the restroom, most people would have a hard time saying no.
That was certainly the case when Thomas Hendrix opened the door to his home in Douglas, Georgia, to find a woman, two young children, and a man standing on his doorstep in need of a restroom. Hendrix, a 94-year-old veteran, welcomed the young family into his home. The woman used the restroom while the man and children went with Thomas into another room of the home.
When Hendrix’s caretaker, Neal DeLoach, returned home later in the day, he checked the home’s security footage.
It was then that he discovered something was very amiss. DeLoach became concerned when he realized that neither he nor Hendrix knew the family. As he continued to watch the security footage, he became even more concerned.
He couldn’t believe what he saw.
On the security footage, DeLoach saw the woman stealing items from the home, including cash from Hendrix’s wallet, before going into the bathroom and flushing the toilet to make it seem as though she had actually used the restroom.
The family then left.
DeLoach later reported that the entire incident was scary given how brazen the people were to walk right into the home. According to DeLoach, there are security cameras situated all over the property. Furthermore, the security cameras are in plain sight for anyone to see. Yet, these people walked right on in and committed burglary anyway.
That’s not all, however.
From that point, the incident took an even stranger turn.
DeLoach naturally contacted the police when he realized that Hendrix had been robbed. The police were able to post surveillance video from the security cameras on Facebook in hopes they would be able to apprehend the criminals.
Now, one would think that if you had robbed someone in plain sight and were caught on camera committing such a crime that you certainly would not be foolish enough to actually admit that you did it.
Yet, that is exactly what this woman did.
In an attempt to defend her actions, as if they could be defended, the woman actually commented on the surveillance video when it was posted on Facebook.
Needless to say, she was apprehended by police.
The incident could have been a tragedy.
Fortunately, everything turned out fine in this situation, but it could have been much, much worse. Elderly and at home alone, Hendrix was a prime target for such a crime. The couple could have perpetrated a far worse crime.
It’s important for people of all ages to recognize that the most common time for home invasions to occur is between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Although burglaries can occur at any time, this is when burglaries are most likely to take place. Burglars will usually enter targeted properties through the front door. In fact, many burglars will actually knock first to determine if anyone is there.
While not all burglars go so far as to claim that they need to use the bathroom to gain access to a home, the case involving Hendrix is certainly not an isolated incident. A family in Texas also reported earlier in the year that they were held at gunpoint for 45 minutes after allowing robbers to use the bathroom. People of any age can be vulnerable to such a scam, but the elderly are particularly susceptible.
