When it comes to keeping a house clean, most people do an excellent job. That includes dusting and wiping all kinds of things like ceiling fan blades, baseboards, door frames, and more. But there are two parts of a home that often gets overlooked — the freezer and the pantry.
We don’t know if it’s because people believe they know what they have or if these are just the two places that they dread cleaning. Either way, you don’t want to overlook your freezer or pantry, as these individuals can attest to. When they decided it was time to tackle the job, they were shocked at what they discovered.
Here are 41 of those discoveries…they’ll either surprise or disgust you.
1. Super puffy
The hardest freezers to clean are the chest type. It’s easy for things to get buried on the bottom…like this puff pastry that was 25 years old. But here’s the crazy part…they cooked and ate it, claiming it didn’t taste bad at all.
2. Gone at the right time
This individual was super lucky. By being away from home, they didn’t feel obligated to taste their dad’s Blue Gill, caught 22 years prior.
3. Just gross
One lady found a cow tongue in her mom’s freezer. That’s bad enough but what makes it worse is they stored it since 1971.
4. What a kind gesture
Hey, at least they showed the bird some well-deserved respect. After all, it’d been frozen for at least six years. Now after all this time, their mom knows what happened to the missing turkey.
5. Does it still work?
You know, they say keeping things frozen extends their lifespan. But after 24 years, we’re not convinced this would still be effective.
6. Not too bad
Comparatively, having mac n’ cheese microwavable singles in the freezer since 2011 isn’t all that bad. Even so, we wouldn’t chance eating it for a million dollars. Well, maybe.
7. Don’t judge
In all fairness, this woman was in the hospital. And she stored the chocolate in a plastic tub, which makes checking the dates difficult. On the other hand, this shows how long it’s been since she cleaned out her freezer.
8. Covert operation
To all parents out there…if you’re going to hide candy from the kids, make sure you remember where you put it. If not, you might be like this person who found goodies years later. But at least they all tasted pretty good.
9. Sentimental
After this poster’s mom died, they had the task of cleaning out her home, which included the freezer. Inside, they came upon a container of clam chowder they’d made for her some 37 years ago. We’re guessing she didn’t like it but wanted to avoid hurting her child’s feelings.
10. No, he didn’t
Yes, he did. After finding a package of 17-year-old ribs in the freezer, one man ate them. His response to his daughter, “Just whack em in’t microwave. They’ll be reet.” We wonder how that turned out.
11. We’d try to forget about this too
Although cod liver oil still has therapeutic properties, at one time, people used it to relieve stiff joints, repair damaged teeth, and improve heart health. But it’s nasty so we can understand why someone forgot about having some in their pantry for 33 years.
12. That’s a long time
Okay, we know that jams and jellies will last years when properly stored…but this might be too long. Forty some years is probably pushing the limit.
13. Unbelievable
Even after being in the freezer for 13 years, the individual cooked and ate it. According to them, it was delicious. They must have a stomach made of steel.
14. We’re praying
Okay, finding chicken from 2016 in the freezer isn’t the worst but then again, it’s chicken. When it comes to poultry, most people are extra careful. But not this family…although they are asking for prayers.
15. Bombs away
We can only imagine the surprise when this was found. But let’s hope they didn’t explode when tossing them out. That could spread some kind of bacteria everywhere.
16. Curiosity
Who knows what this person found when they opened this ancient container of coffee creamer? Perhaps they were smart enough just to toss it out and let their imagination run wild.
17. Cash in
If we found a can of Pepsi from 1976, we’d contact the company to see if it had any monetary value. Hey, if you’re going to hold onto something that long, you might as well find out if it was worth it.
18. Oh, so tangy
When fresh, this is delicious on a toasted bagel. But after 35 plus years, we’re guessing it would have a distinct, tangy flavor. Please tell us they didn’t try it. We can’t even imagine.
19. Scarred for life
At just 11, a girl made her mom lasagna. That’s super sweet. But now at 30, she discovers that it was never eaten. If this mom was nice, she’d go ahead and cook it to prove how much she appreciated her daughter’s effort.
20. Speaking of bombs
We don’t know if this beverage is still carbonated or not. But to err on the side of caution, this person might want to find out by opening it outside. Otherwise, they could end up with an even bigger surprise.
21. Best dinner ever
Most everyone loves Italian food. One family recently had an amazing meal only to find out afterward that the spices used were more than 30 years old. Don’t dried spices last forever?
22. How do people do this?
So, this person found a container of jam that was frozen for 35 years. They let it thaw and then ate it. It seems like some people have no fear. Nope…not going there.
23. Ah…cold beer
Especially on a hot day, a lot of people love an ice-cold beer. So, when a mother-in-law offered her kids and their significant others beer, they didn’t think too much of it. That’s until they looked at the bottom of the can.
24. Not a happy camper
Although throwing out 40-year-old jarred mincemeat makes perfect sense to us, one mother wasn’t very happy with her kids when they did just that. In her mind, it was still just as good as the day she canned it.
25. That’s why
This woman couldn’t figure out why her homemade bread wouldn’t rise. Well, when you use baking powder from 1996, that could be the problem. Time to upgrade.
26. Sounds gross either way
First, we don’t know what this is but it doesn’t sound very appetizing. Second, considering the expiration date was in April 1998, we’re 100 percent it isn’t good now.
27. We love the holidays
Christmas is just about everyone’s favorite time of the year. Along with the tree, lights, and of course, presents, it’s when everyone enjoys food. A favorite…Christmas pudding. But if it dates back 22 years, you better pass. It’s so old, the company that sold it no longer exists.
28. Not feeling brave
Many people think that dry rice will last forever. But once it’s 20-years-old, it’s probably not any good. At least this woman was smart enough not to try it.
29. Seriously questionable
Like spices, there comes a time when you need to throw away bottles of liquid essence. This is especially true if the date on them goes back to 1983.
30. Mom to the rescue
When needing a bottle of food coloring what better person to turn to than good, old mom. Sure, she came through but the bottle expired in 1997. In all fairness, the sticker does say “Best Used By.” So, it’s subjective.
31. We’ll pass
Bouillon is great for enhancing the flavor of soups and stews. But for the ultimate dish, you want to use fresh ingredients. We doubt bouillon this old would have any benefit.
32. It’s disgusting when fresh
Spam is one of those foods you either love or hate. Most people have no interest in eating it, which we understand. But just imagine finding a can in the pantry from 25 years ago? The very thought of it makes our stomach turn.
33. Seriously?
Is there anything about sliced lamb liver that sounds tasty? No way. What about sliced lamb liver from 1997? This is a lose-lose situation.
34. There’s a reason…
…that yeast has an expiration date. After a specific amount of time, it’s no longer effective. Once it’s 10 years old, not even a miracle could make it work.
35. That’s disappointing
For people who love ice cream, you know how yummy that first bite it. But when it tastes like garlic instead of banana, you might want to do a better job cleaning out the freezer. What a disappointment.
36. Here’s to good health insurance
This person found a box of corn dogs in their freezer. Nothing out of the ordinary with that other than the fact they were 10 years old. The poster said they were going to eat them…let’s hope not.
37. Two potential scenarios
Well, you could look at this in one of two ways. First, “looks can be deceiving.” Second, “don’t judge a book by its cover.” The curiosity about which direction this person took is killing us.
38. So close and yet so far
Asian food is delicious. But after being in a freezer for the past 24 years, we highly doubt it has the same texture and flavor as it would when fresh. Just a little insight.
39. Older than the grandkids
Not only would the peanut butter look disgusting but we can only imagine how it would taste. A good rule to follow when cleaning out the freezer or pantry — if the food’s older than the grandkids, especially if they’re adults, throw it out.
40. So yummy
There’s no question that beverages and desserts made with Baileys are wonderful. So, when this person found a bottle from 1999, they were excited. That’s until they tried to pour it. Let’s just say it was no longer in liquid form.
41. A family tradition
If these people play it right, they can keep that same bottle in the family for generations to come. Just follow grandma. Take it out, say “what in the world,” and then put it back. We love traditions.
