We all want our homes to look as good as they possibly can, even if we are on a budget. If you have ever tried to redecorate your home, you know that this process is NOT CHEAP. Even something as simple as a pillow can be surprisingly expensive; giving your home a complete makeover can seem totally unaffordable.
If you are planning to bring a new vibe to your home by purchasing dozens of glitzy new decorations and adornments, you are right – it’s too expensive. But why buy new stuff made by a factory when you can bring your home to life using crafts you completed yourself?
Not only will your home feel fresh and new, but you will be able to look around at your decor with pride. When your friends ask about your furnishings, you will have a story to tell and a reason to be admired. Craft your own home decor, and get more sentimental with your home than you ever have.
One of the best ways to give your house a stylish look is to embrace the rustic-chic trend that is sweeping the Internet. A barn door is the perfect piece for the ensemble. This is one that you can DIY, and the best part? It’s super cheap!
JP Strate and Liz Spillman from The Rehab Life have created an 8 minute video that will give you the barn door you’ve always wanted. Their easy-to-follow tutorial is a great guide for renovating a piece of your home.
You don’t even have to be a pro to complete this task. Even if you are unfamiliar with power tools, you will be able to work your artistic abilities and create an awesome door. Once you have all the necessary supplies, you are set.
Since you are making an entire door, you will need a few objects to get started. Essential supplies include wood boards, trim head screws, strong wood glue, wood filler, a sanding block, a nice wood stain, and some polyurethane.
First, measure and cut the individual pieces of lumber that will form the building blocks of your door. Lay 5 rectangular pieces of equal size next to each other as the chief board of the door, then place pieces of smaller widths and the same length on either side of the board in a door shape. Secure the smaller pieces onto the larger ones on both sides.
Use 3 small rectangular pieces to make the border and centerboard of the door. Glue the pieces into place, then nail them in for security. Next, create the “X” of the barn door by laying the cross pieces diagonally across both the top and bottom of the door. You will need to carefully measure each piece before placing it since this craft has very specific requirements.
Make all your last-minute cuts and glues, then make sure each board is secured into place. Finally, it is time for your finish. Fill in any unwanted screw holes or inconsistencies in the wood with a high-quality wood filler. Once the filler has dried completely, sand down the entire surface and every edge. Your barn door is almost ready!
Last but certainly not least, coat the door in a good stain. You can use a lighter one or a darker one, depending on the look you are going for. Either way, this barn door will look great in your home.
There is no better way to redecorate your home than with a set of DIY crafts. The decor around your house will mean so much more to you when you have created it yourself. With a project like this, you aren’t just decorating a home; you are making memories that will last a lifetime.
