You don’t even have to be a pro to complete this task. Even if you are unfamiliar with power tools, you will be able to work your artistic abilities and create an awesome door. Once you have all the necessary supplies, you are set.

Since you are making an entire door, you will need a few objects to get started. Essential supplies include wood boards, trim head screws, strong wood glue, wood filler, a sanding block, a nice wood stain, and some polyurethane.

First, measure and cut the individual pieces of lumber that will form the building blocks of your door. Lay 5 rectangular pieces of equal size next to each other as the chief board of the door, then place pieces of smaller widths and the same length on either side of the board in a door shape. Secure the smaller pieces onto the larger ones on both sides.

Use 3 small rectangular pieces to make the border and centerboard of the door. Glue the pieces into place, then nail them in for security. Next, create the “X” of the barn door by laying the cross pieces diagonally across both the top and bottom of the door. You will need to carefully measure each piece before placing it since this craft has very specific requirements.

Make all your last-minute cuts and glues, then make sure each board is secured into place. Finally, it is time for your finish. Fill in any unwanted screw holes or inconsistencies in the wood with a high-quality wood filler. Once the filler has dried completely, sand down the entire surface and every edge. Your barn door is almost ready!

Last but certainly not least, coat the door in a good stain. You can use a lighter one or a darker one, depending on the look you are going for. Either way, this barn door will look great in your home.
